Today we’d like to introduce you to Angelica Matthews.
Hi Angelica, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I founded MIM Therapy with a vision: to create a space where both clients and clinicians feel supported, valued, and inspired. This field can be both financially and emotionally demanding, especially for those starting out. I wanted to build a practice that not only helps people heal but also uplifts fellow therapists by fostering growth, learning, and community. It was, and continues to be, important to me to create an environment where everyone feels genuinely welcomed—a place rooted in compassion, where people can pursue their goals in a space that feels safe, affirming, and celebratory of who they are.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No road is ever smooth! I started this journey while working on my PhD in marriage and family therapy, which is filled with enormous pressure and commitments. Also, I sacrificed a long career with CPS, a steady check, and a pension to begin my journey as a therapist. I had to obtain my license, get insurance, find an affordable space, purchase furniture, figure out funding, and figure out how to start my business without a clear outline or step-by-step instructions. The days are long, and there’s rarely enough time to fit in homework and clients each day. But the struggles are worth it!
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about MIM Therapy PLLC?
MIM Therapy PLLC is a Texas-based mental health practice led by Angelica Matthews, a Licensed Professional Counselor Associate and EMDR-trained clinician, supervised by Dr. Kathleen Wallace, LPC-S. My organization is committed to delivering compassionate, client-centered therapy to individuals, couples, and families throughout the state. More importantly, I’ve assembled a team of the most amazing associate clinicians, who are talented, knowledgeable, and have been trained by leading experts in the field. They are all trained in EMDR. Deanna Mehaffey, Lindsey Nance, and Ryan Karper are LPC Associates supervised by Dr. Kathleen Wallace, LPC-S (88881). Melody Chitobolo is also an LPC Associate supervised by Mary Dainty (98640). Chelsea Jaubert is an LMFT Associated supervised by Dr. Misti Sparks (201137). Chelsea co-authored a chapter in a college textbook for marriage and family therapy by Dr. Linda Metcalf. I’m blessed to have such a wonderful group of clinicians to share this journey with! They make the bumps in the road smoother and provide fantastic support to get through the tough times! In case I didn’t mention it earlier, Chelsea and I are in our third year of the Ph.D. in marriage and family therapy, and Lindsey has just started her first year! I’m excited for my team members and look forward to the great things we will accomplish!
