Today we’d like to introduce you to Pulp Design Studios. Them and their team share their story with us below:
Beth Dotolo and Carolina Gentry met when they worked together at a commercial design firm in Dallas. But they knew they wanted to do things differently. They wanted to create a more personalized experience for clients that included product design that would fill a gap in what they were looking for. They wanted to push the boundaries creatively while catering to a client’s individual needs. They had a passion that couldn’t be contained in a limited business owned by someone else. And they wanted to create a brand that went beyond expectations of interior design and to approach design as more than just a service. In 2007, they co-founded Pulp Design Studios, growing the company into a major brand beyond interior design, with headquarters in Dallas, Seattle, and Los Angeles. Today Pulp Design Studios is an iconic force to be reckoned with in the world of interiors, and the firm brings a sense of adventure to the business of design.
With a forward-thinking approach to commerce and design, Pulp has established a unique viewpoint that combines luxury design and a flair for the unexpected. The Pulp team works with residential and commercial clients across the country, helping them define a personal style and transforming interiors into spaces that are brag-worthy and innovative.
Always ahead of the curve, Pulp expertly encompasses the realms of interiors, media, retail, product development, and industry influencing. They have a popular fabric collection with S. Harris, create and sell their own bespoke Pulp products on their website, produce an in-house magazine titled ICON, and they partner with companies across the globe as spokespeople and ambassadors.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There are always bumps on the road in business! The key is how you respond to those challenges. Like everyone else, our biggest challenge definitely came during the pandemic. It impacted everything from how we met with clients, to getting samples for presentations, to the timetable for our workrooms and trades, to shipping. It’s been a wild ride in the last two years or so. The key to keeping things running as smoothly as we could was definitely our commitment to communication. We always keep our clients informed every step of the way, and we provide creative solutions to any challenges. We’ve been lucky to have fantastic clients that understood what was happening and who appreciated how we offered ideas to keep things moving.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next, you can tell us a bit more about your business?
The Pulp founders not only think out of the box when it comes to interior design, but we also move beyond the boundaries of what a “traditional” design firm should be. We create our own products that are sold on our website, we have a fabric collection with S. Harris, and we have started Pulp Properties, a real estate development division. Financially we were interested in creating long-term investments and diversifying our business, but we also wanted to be creative in new ways. Pulp Properties launched our first commercial property in Dallas in the Oak Cliff community. It not only houses our Texas headquarters, but it also is now the home of several woman-owned businesses, including a vintage store, a photography studio, an art gallery, and a fashion house.
Pulp Properties has also launched its first vacation rental property. The first Pulp House is now listed on Airbnb for fabulous getaways in the Racquet Club Estates neighborhood of Palm Springs. This historic mid-century Meiselman house is a fabulous location with hip and design-driven interiors,
We continue to think of fresh new ways to expand our business and keep our creative fire lit.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I think we’ll continue to see a strong focus on creating homes that are considered an oasis for the people living there. Working from home is going to continue to be important, too. So, people are going to continue to explore creative ways to work, play, and live at home.
