Today we’d like to introduce you to Bryan Tzeng.
Hi Bryan, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started my journey when a teacher told me “No one has the right to minimize your feelings. To one person, failing their algebra test might be the worst day of their life, to another, it might be losing their grandfather. No matter what others may say or think, no one has the authority to tell you how you should feel.” I have been passionate about counseling ever since. I received my B.A. of Psychology at UNT and my M.A. of Professional Counseling at Texas Wesleyan University. After graduating from Texas Wesleyan in 2013, I became a clinical intern at the Children’s Advocacy Center for Denton County. I worked with children of physical and sexual abuse in individual sessions, play therapy, and group therapy. While we worked on difficult cases, I loved all my clients and in particular my therapy group. I had never felt more supported than by the staff at the CACDC and loved each individual I worked with. I’ve also worked at behavioral health hospitals and Ranch Hand Rescue, a non-profit organization focused on helping clients struggling with various traumas through connection with animals.
I was blessed through Texas Wesleyan University and my amazing professors, Dr. Linda Metcalf and Dr. Edita Ruzgyte, to travel abroad to China, London, and Australia for additional education and training.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My spouse and I opened Zen Life Counseling at the beginning of 2022 (right after having a baby!), and we haven’t looked back. There have been many challenges with opening our practice. Finical stressors, finding that life-work balance; the trial and errors of starting a business are many. We are so passionate about helping our community and creating a safe space for everyone, it’s all worth it in the end!
We’ve been impressed with Zen Life Counseling, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
At Zen Life Counseling, we are passionate about normalizing mental health care in our community and empowering through care and support. We recognize there is an imminent need to prioritize our mental health in the same way we prioritize our physical health, and we have provided a safe space for everyone to do that. We have a few therapists at our practice, and they all bring their own wonderful and unique qualities. Some of our specialties include Anxiety, Coping Skills, Depression, Grief, and Trauma/PTSD. As you can probably tell from our name, we practice forms of Mindfulness and Meditation and find these practices to be very effective. We are LGBTQIA+ allied and have bilingual therapists in Spanish and Mandarin. We take many of the most common insurance companies and have therapists on Open Path Collective, where they can offer a much lower private pay rate for those who do not have insurance.
We serve Fort Worth, Colleyville, Grapevine, Keller, and surrounding areas in Tarrant County and North Texas.
We encourage you to check out our website to learn more about us!
Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs, or other resources you think our readers should check out?
“Dare to Lead” by Brené Brown has been influential on my work as a therapist and leader. “Solution-Focused Brief Therapy with Clients Managing Trauma” is a wonderful book for anyone interested in Solution-Focused therapy.
Some podcasts I like to listen to when I need to unwind are Ear Biscuits (Rhett & Link), Not Another Dungeons & Dragons Podcast, and TED Talks Daily.
