Today we’d like to introduce you to Carlos J. Duran
Hi Carlos J., so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My name is Carlos J. Duran, I am 46 years old, to get where I am I had to travel a long road, this road began in Venezuela my native country where after having a successful career within first level banking institutions for more than 20 years, due to circumstances of persecution I had to leave my country in 2019, choosing this great and beautiful country called the United States of America to spend some time, after this time and unable to return to Venezuela due to risks and threats, I decided to start a new life. Choosing Texas and more specifically Dallas to start over, and start from scratch, in this beautiful and vibrant city that I began to discover day by day, I saw how it had a lot of traffic and large highways, it is the first image of Dallas, but looking deeper, I began to see the potential of the city, while I began to work in different areas such as, construction, demolition, restoration, cleaning, I worked in the kitchen in restaurants, as a dishwasher, as a waiter, I made delivery applications. While I was doing all these jobs from Monday to Sunday, even holding down 2 or 3 jobs at the same time, I started studying English first, then I studied personal taxes, and finally I got a paralegal certification and certification in the area of life insurance, all of this in parallel with the jobs I was doing. Hoping to return to work serving and advising people with the best quality of service that I am used to providing, I achieved this point in 2024, after 5 years of hard work, dedication to study, perseverance and determination to achieve goals. So today I can say that since 2024 (and counting) I have been advising Latino people in my community in the area of personal taxes and business formation, helping people with their immigration forms, and above all speaking and teaching by example that if you want, you can. You just have to decide where you want to go, because this city and this country give you the tools.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been an easy path, in fact it is still a very difficult path that must be overcome day by day, The first obstacle that I encountered was the language barrier. To overcome it, I had to start studying like a child going to kindergarten for the first time. The second obstacle, and the most complicated, was learning the laws, rules, and regulations that govern this country and what makes it work the way it does. This obstacle is the reason why I decided to study taxes and legal terminology, so I could understand how the United States of America works. Finally, the mental and physical exhaustion from the long work days, the type of work, and the tired and fatigued nights forced me to study to improve my present.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I love Dallas in its entirety, it is a metropolis in every sense of the word, it has a very diverse gastronomic offering, it is a beautiful multicultural center, a city with economic expansion in all sectors, first-class educational offering, cinemas and theaters for different tastes, a city that bets on development and inclusion, here no one is left behind, and that is what I love most about Dallas, there is room for everyone.
The only thing I don’t like at all is the variation of our city’s weather, it’s unpredictable.
