Today, we’d like to introduce you to David Headley.
Hi David, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started Shedding Light on Solar after working as a residential solar salesman and realizing I was trained to provide inaccurate information to homeowners. I was in love with my job, but I refused to lie or withhold any information that may negatively impact a buyer’s decision. After just a couple of months, I had done enough research on my own to realize I had been misled. For starters, net metering was much more complicated than a simple 1:1; dealer fees are disguised, and don’t get me started on leases and PPAs. That’s just the tip of the iceberg. Even as much as I loved this industry, I realized staying in sales was something I could no longer morally participate in. After much consideration and almost a year of finding resources and gaining knowledge, I set out to create an alternative to traditional sales consultations. For one small fee, Homeowners now have the option to have someone truly on their side throughout the entire solar process.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been incredibly challenging to explain the difference between a consultation with Shedding Light and a traditional sales consultation. Due to the reputation of solar salesmen, many potential clients assume I am just another salesman with an angle. In reality, I am not selling solar whatsoever. I’m completely neutral, and I have absolutely nothing to gain if the homeowner decides to pursue solar after our consultation. In my opinion, non-biased solar consultations are necessary for the future of residential solar.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I start with a mock sales consultation and fill in all the gaps the solar salesman may omit. From there, I discuss financing options, dealer fees, PPAs, and leases. Next, it’s time to educate the homeowner on utilizing one of the most important tools a homeowner can use in TexasPowerGuide.com. By generating a free energy plan analysis, we will be able to find the best solar buyback plan available for the client’s specific system. Using Opensolar.com, PVwatts, and TexasPowerGuide.com, I tailor my consultations to each homeowner and make sure they understand all the nuances involved in deciding if solar is the right decision. I have an agreement in place with a company I trust to provide low PPW if the homeowner decides to pursue solar, and I will review any other quotes they may receive. Importantly, I take no referral commission, so you know I am only there to provide honest information.
Any big plans?
Currently, I have designed an app prototype that I believe will greatly benefit homeowners in their ability to do their research, as well as solar salesmen and their ability to properly prepare for their consultations. I’ve had and am currently scheduled meetings with companies that are key to making this app a reality, and I am excited to present my ideas. If things go as planned, both Homeowners and salesmen will have all the tools and guidance of Shedding Light at the push of a button.
