Exploring Life & Business with Demetria Olive of A Touch of Olive Personal Chef & Culinary Services

Today we’d like to introduce you to Demetria Olive.

Hi Demetria, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
In 2010, life handed me one of those unexpected turning points—I was laid off from my job. As a single mom, the uncertainty was overwhelming, but in that moment, I saw an opportunity instead of a setback. For years, I had been juggling my day job with my true passion: cooking. I’d spend evenings and weekends preparing meals for friends and family, often hearing, “You should do this full-time!” Still, the idea of stepping out on my own felt daunting—until I had no choice but to bet on myself.

Being a mother was (and still is) my most important role, and I knew I wanted a life that allowed me to be present for my son—not just financially, but emotionally and physically. Starting my own private chef business gave me that freedom. It was scary, but it was also incredibly empowering. I began with small, intimate dinners for loved ones. Word traveled fast—referrals came pouring in, and soon I was cooking in homes, hosting events, and serving individuals and families who valued not just good food, but the love and care that went into it.

Over the past 15 years, that little leap of faith has grown into a thriving culinary business offering a range of services, from in-home meal prep to special occasion catering and beyond. I’m incredibly grateful for the clients—both long-time and new—who’ve trusted me to feed their families, celebrate milestones, and make memories through food.

Looking back, what started as a necessity became my purpose. Every dish I create is a reflection of that journey—one rooted in resilience, fueled by love, and seasoned with the joy of doing what I was meant to do.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Of course, the path hasn’t always been smooth. Like many entrepreneurs—especially single moms building a business from the ground up—I’ve faced my fair share of struggles. In the beginning, I worried constantly about finances, wondering if I could really make this work long-term. I questioned whether I had enough support, whether I could stand out in a competitive industry, and—if I’m being honest—whether I was even good enough to succeed.

Those insecurities didn’t magically disappear with time. Even now, I sometimes find myself facing moments of doubt. But what I’ve learned is that growth isn’t just about the wins—it’s about continuing to show up, even on the hard days. It’s about pushing forward when you’re tired, staying creative when you feel drained, and trusting your gift even when your confidence wavers.

Through it all, my love for cooking and the joy it brings to others has kept me grounded. Every satisfied client, every returning family, every child who says, “That’s the best thing I’ve ever tasted,” reminds me why I started. It’s not just about food—it’s about purpose, connection, and creating something meaningful, even in the face of doubt.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Most people might be surprised to know there have been a few times where something I’ve made was a complete fail while at an event or private dinner! Although panic sets in, I ended up improvising on the spot, without their knowledge, created something else or adjust the original recipe and each time it’s been a hit! Thank goodness!
