Today we’d like to introduce you to Denisse Urbina.
Hi Denisse, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started cosmetology in 2009, Graduated in 2011. I did it all haircuts, color, wax, and lashes but it wasn’t my passion. I started working in a Nail salon in 2012 and that’s where my career took off. For me it was more like a weekend job, back then my kids were little and I couldn’t work as much. I worked in several nail salons. In each one of them, I learned something new. In 2018 I was hired by Podiatrist; I didn’t have medical experience but I was ready to learn. I have had some experiences with clients through the years that I didn’t know how to handle because of my lack of knowledge and education. I became an Advanced Nail Technician, Medical Nail Technician and Podiatrist Assistant one year later, my passion for giving the best of my kept me going. On December of 2019, I was ready and decided to start my own business. I rented my suite On February 2020 and opened for the public.
March 1st and the March 19, 2020, COVID changed my life. I was only able to work for 19 days, I didn’t qualify for PPP loans my business was just established, so there was no way. I remember I used to cry at night because my dream failed. My husband kept me motivated, I used to receive calls from customers every day but I was really scared to service them. 2 months later When TDLR lifted the mandate for salons to reopen, I was scared but I was determined. Post on Facebook about my services and the response was huge. I received around 300 Messages, then I knew God had plans for me. So far, I work every day and I see around 4-5 clients a day. I want to expand and give more people the opportunity to grow. This industry has a big demand people and nail technicians don’t know about it. For me, it’s more regarding help and elderly client with problematic nails than do pretty nails. I see kids, adults, and elderly people. I help them with Medical Grade Pedicures. Clients that assist to me are at risk going to regular salons.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Definitely struggle with COVID, relocating suites, doing it alone, long hours, me doing everything, and not being able to find help. Not all Technicians want to deal with fungal nails, thick nails, dry skin, etc.
As you know, we’re big fans of Unico Nail Care. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
First, I love what I do! I don’t Do it just because of the money. I am a Medical Nail Technician I take care of
All kinds of clients who are at risk of going to regular nail salons. Every set of feet I see is unique and everyone has different needs. That’s where the name Unico came from. I wanted to reach out.
To the Hispanic community, and offer this type of care that is really rare to find. I want to educate people the importance of having a good health on our feet. We only have one pair and need to take care of them the proper and correct way. I worked in all kinds of salons and I saw all kinds of wrong practices and improper care. Technicians would use dirty tools on everyone, the same files, and buffers, and use improper implements that instead of helping put people at risk of amputations and even death. Yes! A Pedicure can be that dangerous.
We’d love to hear what you think about risk-taking?
People (not my clients) called me scam many times because of my pictures. They don’t believe in my work. People say my prices were high compared to regular salons and of course, I’ve studied more and dedicated a lot of time to come up with the best services, products, and techniques. My implements are sterilized just like when you assist to a dentist. I do an assessment of their feet first and if there is something I can’t help them with I refer them to a podiatrist.
