Today we’d like to introduce you to Destiny Ross.
Destiny, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Well, starting from the very beginning, I was born in Arlington Texas, and went to middle school around that area & various high schools such as Martin, Kennedale before graduating from South Grand Prairie. We moved around frequently being that my mom was a business woman so I experienced a lot. Wanting to broaden my spectrum I decided to continue my education at Tarleton State University.
Throughout my childhood, my hair was always the way I expressed myself. I consistently did my hair in different styles, ponytails, braids, twists, everything but color ‘cause that was “acting grown” in my household. During senior year in high school, I was getting ready for prom and wanted to get a real sew-in weave for the first time. The hair and the installation cost about $500 total and this sparked an interest for me. What if I just got the hair and install it on myself? I just didn’t know how, yet. This was back in 2015 so wigs were still an older person thing so I knew nothing about them, except that my mom and grandma had a few church wigs on hand for those chaotic Sunday mornings. So, I went to what I like to call it, YouTube University. After watching a few wig-making videos, I had the confidence to make my own using a teddy bear as a wig head. Once I made 1, I just kept going. I fell in love with the versatility and the array of colors and styles I could create. Doing this got some attention and I soon was being asked to color other people’s hair.
When I got to college, I used all my spare time learning new techniques, buying hair and wig supplies, and building my custom wig reputation. In 2018 Destination Hair was born.
Since then, I have been growing my Wig business from the ground up client by client. When I’m not doing hair, I’m spending my time doing what I studied in college, Videography, graphic design & events. I spend most of my time on sets of commercials, music videos, YouTube content, television shows, and movies. Growing up My dad and I would bond over a powerful Spike Lee film, move onto a Bloom House horror, then finishing the night off with a funny Jim Carry classic. My lifetime goal since then was to make movies and be in the TV industry in some way so I chose to be behind the camera. Now I’m doing exactly that working as a Camera operator or production assistant on various shoots per month in Dallas Texas.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, it was not smooth, and yes there were many obstacles, but what business or career is absent of challenges? The thing is with life you always need a plan like a literal step-by-step plan of how you’re going to execute your goals and your life. Plan to use your own money sometimes for restocking your products. Plan to have clients change their mind in the middle of a sale. Plan for your package to be delayed because of different country holidays or different time zones. Everything will be okay, access the problem, fix it and move on.

How do you define success?
I define success as the feeling of being comfortable to do anything that you desire. Feeling success is more important to me than being the average standard of it.
