Today we’d like to introduce you to Greg Garcia.
Hi Greg, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
Hi there! I started making protein ice cream about six years ago when I realized that I wanted a better-tasting post-workout snack. I went home, started experimenting, and used my kids as the measure on taste. Once they told me that it tasted good and asked for another, I knew we were on to something.
So, we went (and are still on) a CPG journey! We found a local co-manufacturer, figured out the basics of the business stuff, and introduced our Proletas – high-protein ice cream bars to the world!
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
As smooth as a washed-out country road. There have been lots of challenges and opportunities along the way, from figuring out just the basics of how to get a business started to the particulars, like how do we turn a great idea into a profitable business. And for the record, we are still figuring that part out (lots of fine-tuning). One of the biggest struggle that we are facing is how to ship our ice cream bars in a cost-effective way.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Proletas is a brand that wants our client to be happy and healthy and makes a better-for-you ice cream bar that supports muscle growth and development. Our ice cream bars are single servings that have significant amounts of protein; you can get up to 30 grams in a single bar. We believe that your food should support your body and your soul. Food is our love language, and ice cream is one of our favorite dialects. The ice cream bar on a stick evokes memories of fun and great times of comfort. We also love the gym and physical fitness, and protein is a huge component of gaining and maintaining muscle. So, we put the two of those together in our protein ice cream bars.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
A saying that I remember from growing up is “Luck favors the prepared mind.” I believe that luck is circumstances that happen, and it’s how you respond that makes it good or bad. I try to prepare for as many scenarios as I can that are reasonable and position myself to avoid as many bad luck situations as possible. But you can’t see them all, like the blown engine in our truck that we use to go to pop-up events and deliver out bars, or a government-mandated shutdown where the majority of your distribution partners (gyms) get shuttered.
