Exploring Life & Business with James Chapman of Landscaper

Today we’d like to introduce you to James Chapman.

Hi James, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started this business as a side gig a couple of years ago while I was still working my 9-to-5 job. Money was tight, so one day I grabbed an old mower my mom and dad had given me and just went for it. I made a post on Facebook offering lawn mowing, and a client trusted me with their yard. I loaded my equipment into the trunk of a 2002 Subaru Impreza and got to work. As I pushed that mower across the yard, I realized how much I enjoyed it and when I saw the results of my first job, I was hooked.

One client quickly turned into ten, and soon I needed something bigger than my Subaru. I sold it, bought an F-150, and that’s when Chapman Curb Appeal really began. For two years I hustled working full time during the day and loading up my truck after hours to mow, trim, and haul until dark.

In 2025, I finally made the leap and left my 9-to-5 to run the business full time. Today, we have multiple clients and several contracts. It hasn’t been easy what started off exciting quickly became stressful, and there were moments I thought about walking away. But my wife reminded me that she’s always by my side, and without her support, this business wouldn’t exist. While I’m out working, she’s holding things together, and that kind of partnership is what keeps a business strong and successful.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Of course, there have been struggles equipment breaking down, clients not paying on time, and moments when we couldn’t afford materials for the next job. Challenges like these come with the territory, and they can happen again and again. But what matters most is how you push through them and who you have by your side to make things better.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Landscaper ?
