Today we’d like to introduce you to Jane Powler.
Jane, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started college back in 1981 ready to do whatever it took to become an attorney, a dream I had maintained since I saw Perry Mason the first time at seven years old. In fall of 1982 I took a semester off to get married. That break lasted for 25 years, three additional marriages (and three divorces) and three children. During that time, I was a master photographer, an on-air personality for a radio station, a retail manager. I even detailed cars (ugh) before setting into the financial sector.
I completed my bachelors in business administration in 2009 after my husband pointedly asked if I still wanted to be a lawyer and if so, what was stopping me. Once the message sank in that the only one stopping me was ME, I started the climb.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
For those that are not lawyers, the first year of law school is – rough. It’s like a game of Survivor, but you are paying 50K plus to participate. You spend every day in a room full of the smartest people in the room. Since everyone is already an A student, your grades are curved relative to each other. And following the proscribed study plan. there are 40 hours a week total allocated to family, social, and sleep. At 25 and uncommitted, ok. Ay 47, married, and kids…not happening.
To summarize, I had so much fun trying to balance family, finances, study, and breathing…I earned the opportunity to do that first year all over again. From scholarship in August to reapplying for the most dreaded label in law school- restart.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Jane Fowler Law, PLLC?
We do things a little different at my firm. As stated earlier, I have family law frequent flier miles. I have been my core client. I work hard to make sure everyone remains an individual instead the “descriptive” case. Our first “negative” review came because my employees do not quote the price of anything other than a consultation over the phone. Why? No one is the same and I reserve the right to taylor everything, including my fees to the person in the room.
I practice true family law – from adoptions, to divorce, to child and child welfare, to estate planning an probate. I handle the issues that occur in a family’s life. If they have issues that are not in my wheelhouse I get them the name of someone who can.
That is family law.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
If you believe you can do it you can, but recognize that those big ole obstacles along the way are meant to temper your resolve. They help you not only meet your goal, but thrive.
