Exploring Life & Business with Jay Shaw of Abundant Living Coaching and Hypnosis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jay Shaw

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I first got introduced to hypnosis at 14 when I volunteered for a stage show at a carnival. I went up there thinking it was all fake—until the hypnotist had my eyelids glued shut and my arm floating in the air. That moment stuck with me. From then on, I was hooked.

I started by reading books, watching YouTube videos, and practicing on anyone who’d sit still long enough. My family wasn’t sold on the whole “mind control” thing, so I had to fund my own education. Once I joined the military, I used my income and travel opportunities to train with some of the best hypnotists in the world—Mike Mandel, Igor Ledochowski, the Jacquins—and eventually became an honor graduate from the Hypnosis Motivation Institute.

As I neared the end of my military career, I realized I didn’t want another job—I wanted freedom. I wanted to play for a living. Hypnosis was the only thing that felt more like play than work, so I went all in. I started helping people on base quit smoking, crush their fitness tests, and reprogram their mindset for success. I also started streaming online, sharing how people could use their subconscious minds to hit their goals. By the time I left the military, I had built up a steady enough income to go full-time.

The biggest lesson I learned? Being great at hypnosis wasn’t enough—I had to learn how to market myself. Once I cracked the code, everything changed. I stopped selling “hypnosis” and started offering transformation. I built my brand by giving value first—free strategy calls, content that actually helped people before they ever paid me, and showing them how change was possible. A percentage of them naturally wanted to work with me, and my business took off.

Today, I get paid to do something I love—something I’d do for free. My kids get to see their dad providing while doing work that matters, and I get to see the lightbulb go off when people realize, my only limit is me. Looking ahead, I’m focused on growth—not just for myself, but for other hypnotherapists and coaches who have the skills but don’t yet understand how to market themselves. Because I’ve met too many brilliant practitioners who could change lives—if only the right people could find them.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I think one of the biggest struggles for people in the “helping space” is that we get into this work because we want to help people—not necessarily because we want to run a business. That was a big challenge for me.

How do I charge people? What about the ones who can’t afford it? Wait… I have to pay taxes? Oh, and marketing? I thought being good at what I do would be enough, but I quickly learned that if no one knows you exist, it doesn’t matter how skilled you are.

Another challenge was staying faithful and committed through gaps in cash flow. There were times when money was flowing in faster than I could count it, and then—out of nowhere—we’d hit a slow period. It forced me to learn not just how to get clients, but how to create consistency. I had to build systems, diversify my income, and trust the process even when things got quiet.

I had to shift my mindset from just helping to helping sustainably. I realized that charging for my work didn’t mean I was taking from people—it meant I could reach more people, invest in my growth, and ultimately make a bigger impact. Once I cracked that, everything changed.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Abundant Living Coaching and Hypnosis isn’t just about hypnosis—it’s about transformation. I firmly believe that every problem is a thinking problem, and every problem has a solution. If you can trace an issue back to your thinking, then you can change it—and when you change your thinking, everything else has to fall in line.

We specialize in helping people break free from what’s holding them back, whether it’s shedding excess weight, quitting nicotine, managing stress, or building unshakable confidence. But what sets us apart? We don’t just “do hypnosis”—we coach people through real change using our 5C Program:

Clarity – Defining what you really want and identifying the subconscious blocks in the way.
Calibration – Rewiring limiting beliefs and aligning your mindset with success.
Confidence – Strengthening self-trust and eliminating doubt at the subconscious level.
Competence – Building the habits, skills, and subconscious patterns that drive lasting change.
Consistency – Locking in transformation so that results stick, long after our work together.
This system ensures that our clients don’t just experience temporary change—they reprogram their subconscious for long-term success.

Brand-wise, I’m most proud that we’re not just helping individuals—we’re helping the industry. I don’t just work with clients one-on-one; I also teach other hypnotherapists and coaches how to market themselves effectively. Too many skilled practitioners struggle because they don’t know how to position themselves. I’m changing that by showing them how to get in front of the right people and build thriving businesses.

For readers looking to break through barriers—whether personal or professional—I want them to know that change isn’t just possible, it’s inevitable when you work with the subconscious mind the right way.

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
Some of my favorite books that have shaped my mindset and approach to success are:

Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill – A classic on the power of belief and persistence.
Psycho-Cybernetics by Maxwell Maltz – A deep dive into self-image and the subconscious mind’s role in success.
As a Man Thinketh by James Allen – A short but powerful book on how thoughts shape reality.
You Are the Placebo by Dr. Joe Dispenza – A game-changer on the power of the mind to heal and transform.
Everything by Joe Dispenza – His work on neuroscience, visualization, and the subconscious is next-level.
These books aren’t just about motivation—they’re about rewiring your thinking to create real, lasting change.
