Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Mozeke. Them and their team share their story with us below:
Jennifer Mozeke, better known as Mozeke, is a native of Dallas but grew up in Louisiana. She is a Certified Professional Midwife through the North American Registry of Midwives (NARM), a Licensed Midwife in Texas, and has attended over 200 births. She is a graduate of Mercy in Action College of Midwifery, where she obtained a Bachelor of Science in Midwifery degree. She also has a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Louisiana at Monroe and a Master of Arts in Arts, Entertainment, and Media Management from Columbia College Chicago.
Her journey to midwifery began years ago after the birth of her first child. The experience left her with an intense passion for reproductive justice, birth equity, and postpartum wellness. The calling was undeniable and soon after the birth of her second child in 2017, she was able to answer that call. Mozeke believes that midwifery care should be an affordable and easily accessible option for any pregnant person who desires holistic, evidence-based, family-centered care where pregnancy is not viewed as an illness but rather a unique and normal process of life. She is dedicated to serving families in the Dallas-Fort Worth area through education, nutritional counseling, advocacy, prenatal, labor, birth, and postpartum care.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Nothing is every smooth, is it? Midwifery has presented many challenges, with finances being the biggest one. Midwifery students can’t work a regular job during their apprenticeship which makes it incredibly difficult to the maintain household, buy school supplies, pay tuition, etc. As a licensed midwife, the biggest obstacle is misinformation. So many people are getting information but not context to help with understanding the information which can lead to trauma and poor birth outcomes.
We’ve been impressed with Trinity Birth Services, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Trinity Birth Services centers the MotherBaby unit. All other parties (partners, family, community, professionals, and providers) should be working together to help the MotherBaby unit have a positive and empowering birth outcome. I am extremely proud of the relationships and collaborations that I have cultivated within my community. In addition to my private practice, I recently opened a nonprofit organization, For the People Birth Equity, that seeks to reduce maternal and infant mortality by offering free and low-cost services.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I’m not sure if people know this or not, but my passion for birth equity and reproduction health was not born from pain or trauma. My personal birth experiences were amazing. Instead, my passion comes from the deep belief that I didn’t just get lucky. It wasn’t just a fluke and other women can experience this same thing in or out of the hospital.
