Exploring Life & Business with Jeremy Julian of Custom Business Solutions

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeremy Julian.

Hi Jeremy, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I literally grew up in the Restaurant Technology Industry. My family is the founders of Custom Business Solutions, Inc., and my early school vacations were spent soldering components for restaurant customers. Twenty-plus years later and I am the President and CRO for CBS, in charge of the implementation of technology systems for CBS customers. It’s fair to say that I am in touch with the challenges and issues facing restaurant operators in the area of technology systems. I am also the founder of the Restaurant Technology Guys Podcast and Blog. A leading thought leadership resource for all things restaurant technology.

Outside of work, my wife Michelle and I are the busy parents of two boys and two girls. The family’s youngest son was adopted from Uganda. Four kids, youth sports, church, and many other activities mean non-stop action at the Julian household. I am a big fan of baseball and soccer. When not cheering on the kids in sports, I enjoy cooking and watching Food Network.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Restaurants have been among the most affected businesses due to the pandemic. With social distancing requirements, capacity limits, and other restrictions in many areas, establishments have had to alter their policies and operations to remain open. Many restaurants have switched to limited or take-out-only menus while others have closed altogether due to the financial strain of losses from decreased customers and increased costs for protective equipment.

In addition, there are restaurant owners facing additional challenges. With fewer customers, their ability to generate revenue is reduced, and they are increasingly dependent on delivery services such as Uber Eats or DoorDash. Though these services offer convenience to customers, restaurants may experience higher costs due to commission fees for using the services.

All of this has impacted our business over the past few years. Having restaurants all over the country made for constant changes to our policies and practices.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I put it into my bio earlier but have worked in and around the business since I was 10 years old. I loved baseball and soccer growing up, and those passions have not changed. I have been a leader on the sports field and always enjoyed competing in whatever games were being played.
