Exploring Life & Business with John Beritan of Headboards World

Today we’d like to introduce you to John Beritan

John, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I had been working in the upholstery business for a few years. Building bed frames and upholstering. One day I decided to take a leap of faith and spent weeks researching trends, gathering materials, and sketching designs. Experimented with different fabrics from rich velvets to soft linens, and played with shapes and sizes. My workshop was soon filled with prototypes, each one a testament to my dedication to craftsmanship and innovation.

To test the market I started small. Reached out to a few loyal clients offering to create custom headboards for their bedrooms and the response was overwhelmingly positive. Word spread quickly, and before long I was receiving requests from designers all over the city. As demand grew I realized I needed to expand and hired a small team of apprentices and taught them the art of carpentry & upholstery, sharing my knowledge and passion. We began producing headboards, daybeds, chairs, comercial booths, ottomans, banquettes in various styles, from sleek and modern to ornate and traditional. We offered customization options that allowed clients to choose their fabric, color, and design, ensuring each piece was as unique as the person who ordered it.

Every time I see one of our creations in a client’s home I feel a deep sense of pride knowing that we built something truly special. My dream is to have Headboards World become synonymous with luxury and comfort in the world of home decor – one headboard at a time

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
As the years go by I noticed that fewer people were investing in high-quality furniture. Mass-produced cheaper options from big box stores were becoming the norm and fewer customers were willing to pay for the craftsmanship that shops offer.

The cost of high-quality materials have been rising and the shop’s income wasn’t always enough to cover expenses. There were months when I barely broke even, and was worried about how to pay my employees and keep the shop running.

I used this as an opportunity to reassess my business and streamlined operations. I negotiated better deals with suppliers and I was able to stabilize the shop’s finances.

Then in early 2020 everything changed. The world was suddenly hit by the COVID-19 pandemic and life as everyone knew it was turned upside down.

As time went by I noticed that with everyone spending more time at home there was a growing interest in home improvement. People wanted to refresh their living spaces, making them more comfortable and aesthetically pleasing. I began promoting my services through social media and sharing before-and-after photos of projects we had completed in the past. This helped us stay connected with customers and attract new ones.

Through all the struggles—the changing market, financial difficulties, and Covid —I learned the importance of adaptability, determination, and community and realized that success wasn’t just about keeping the business going: It was about growing and evolving, even in the face of adversity.
