Exploring Life & Business with Joseph Brumfield of Black Wealth Under God

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joseph Brumfield.

Hi Joseph, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
Definitely! For me, it started out as an issue of necessity. I had a bill I needed to pay which required more money than my previous employer could handle because it was more of a college job so I began to search for employment opportunities that could provide that. From there I just explored my different interests, the stock market was super appealing to me just as a concept, so I pursued that. By the grace of God, I was able to get in the door with no experience and no degree at that time.

As someone who didn’t come from money, I was always interested in that area and learning how to improve things for myself and my family. Once I was hired, I began to realize how little I either spoke to or interacted with people who looked like me in this space. As a follower of Christ, I strongly believe that it’s my responsibility to take what I’ve been blessed with and give it back, which brings us here to present day.

The question I then asked myself was, how do I spread this information and help as many people as possible?

I’m a huge podcast nerd, I listen to podcasts pretty much all day every day and I wanted to start my own, so this represented a good opportunity to not only do a podcast but about something I’m really passionate about. And so, the Black Wealth Under God podcast was born. Speaking of which, it can be found on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Overcast, Google Podcasts, etc., please go check it out. Remember after you listen, go rate, review, and subscribe!

So, at this point in the journey, it’s just about getting the word out to as many people as possible to continue building up the community so that we can continue to change the trajectory of not only our lives but many others as well. We’re working on some different ideas and some really exciting things are planned for the future so I’m grateful to you and your team for allowing me this platform to continue getting the word out!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not even remotely. I’d say my main struggle is my personality. I’m very laid back and I stay pretty lowkey, so when it comes to marketing and social media and everything that comes with building a brand in this day and age… I’m just not good at it so that’s been a major struggle. I’ve had a lot of help getting better at being more social but I’ve still got a long way to go.

Another struggle that I had at the beginning was coming up with a name, that was really hard for me for some reason. Eventually, I came to the point where I just stopped working on it because I felt like I was trying too hard if that makes any sense. One day, I just prayed about it and when I got up it felt like the name came to me almost instantly and it expressed the exact sentiment of the entire brand and with that sequence of events, the Black Wealth Under God podcast began!

Lastly, navigating the podcast world has been interesting, nobody likes their voice, so I’ve had to get used to hearing mine when I edit. The good thing about that however is that not only did I teach myself a new skill in editing but I’m learning more and more about vocal control and becoming a better speaker. As I talk about this, I remember back in college in my Speech class (which I hated) the professor was so hard on me because he thought I could be a great speaker, funny how things work out.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Black Wealth Under God?
Black Wealth Under God is the financial arm of BreezeWay Enterprises LLC. I specialize in educating and developing the black Christian community in the area of financial literacy. I believe what sets this brand apart from others is not only do we focus on building financial literacy in the black community but even more importantly, building that knowledge in a way that glorifies the Kingdom of God.

I would say that I’m most proud of finding a space that allows me to contribute to the Kingdom in a way that genuinely interests me. People talk so much about finding passion and pursuing passion, it’s interesting that I just kind of stumbled into all of this by “accident”. For me, it’s important for others to know that whether you’re a beginner, who has never created a budget or someone who has never invested, I am here to help build those skill sets in whatever way I can.

You can start from anywhere and you don’t have to have a lot. It’s just about making the best decisions with whatever you have and being a good steward. And by being a good steward, you can release the abundance of heaven into your situation!

What was your favorite childhood memory?
Oh man, favorite childhood memory. There’s a lot of them but just playing basketball really. I have so many moments I could point to, so many relationships built through the sport that it’s hard to point to just one, so I’ll just say basketball as a whole.

And getting a Sock’em bopper punching bag for Christmas one year as a bonus!

I punched that thing to death after like 4/5 days of having it! I was into WWF at that time so I was like picking it up and hitting it with the Rock Bottom, jumping off the couch with it and then the final nail in the coffin, shout out to the Undertaker, was hitting it with a chair. Good times!
