Today we’d like to introduce you to Kasey Scharnett King, LMFT-S, CST.
Hi Kasey, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I always said therapy found me. However, after looking back, I was always destined to do this work. It was an interesting transition that started with my desire to work with children. After doing that in grad school, I realized working with children yielded little–without the presence of the parent(s). Therefore, I decided to shift from solely child work to marriages and families. As I started to learn and see more couples, I understood that I needed to have a deeper knowledge in sex (which is where my Sex Therapy certification derived). My goal has always been to strengthen the homes of the Black Families, as they used to be. That is still my goal today– it just looks a little different. As you increase the marital foundation, the children see the benefit. My hope is that this work will then shift generations to come.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has never been a smooth road. I once read a quote that “in order to be great, you must fail.” I use that not only in my professional life but also personal life. There is no thing that started off amazing and stayed that way, as learning often happens in the midst of trials. Being a military veteran and spouse, my career has been nothing but shaky. Some of my struggles involved licensing then moving, only to be told my license isn’t valid–to basically having to start back over. Doing this alone, during my husband’s deployments, multiple familial losses and moves have set me back plenty times. However, I believe those setbacks also is a testament to how much I love the work I do, my resilience and dedicated to field.
We’ve been impressed with Lavender Healing Center, PLLC, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Lavender Healing Center a practice that services individuals, couples and families. We specialize in Marriage and Sex Therapy and that is what most people know us for. We also work with veterans and women who struggle in the workplace and seeking self improvement. We are licensed in the stated of Texas and Mississippi. Our practice also offers therapy intensives for those who prefer “retreat style” services in a shorter period of time. We also offer premarital counseling for couples preparing for marriage and want to ensure their marriage is starting off on the right foot.
What sets us apart is we are a triple threat: Black, Sex Therapy and a strong military background. Having lived the life, on both sides (vet and spouse), we are able to see life from multiple view points and understand the challenges of living the life of a solider and spouse – in a addition to the impact it has on the family. Many people don’t understand the challenges of moving every few years, the instability and anxiety it creates in the system and that of the child–LHC does.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
In the next 5-10 years, I see therapy being more accessible, regarding somatic based approaches. We have done a great job of making it accessible over the past couple of decades and not something of luxury. However, we have a ways to go by offering somatic based experiences and places talk therapy can’t reach.. Our field is expanding regarding bottom-up approaches as is processes differently. LHC offer Brainspotting to assist with high stress and trauma. Other practices will offer more of that, EMDR, ART and others.
