Exploring Life & Business with Keith Watson of KAW Consulting

Today we’d like to introduce you to Keith Watson.

Hi Keith, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
We got started just before the pandemic as a 3-piece family band (Jake and Max are my sons) out of preparation for doing a vacation together going to Hollywood to play with Jerry Cantrell and Mike Inez of Alice in Chains and with Rob and Dean Deleo of STP. During the process of rehearsing we started jamming our own tunes and decided to record. Once we got enough songs for a live set, we started booking gigs only to be thwarted by the global pandemic. We managed to get one gig in before that all took place. During the pandemic, we recorded an entire album, our first. On that record, we had some guest players in Amir Derakh (Julien-K, Dead by Sunrise, Orgy) and Tony Franklin (The Firm, White Snake, Blue Murder). The music we were self-producing became involved enough where we were going to need a dedicated bass player going forward. We enlisted Mark Marks who I was in a band with called Natural Born Thrillers. The chemistry with he and the band was great. After playing numerous shows coming back after the pandemic, we started work on our second album, Dark Day’s Night. Mark contributed greatly to that record, which is our most successful to date. On the back of that record we’ve played some really important stages including Trees here in Dallas as well as The Viper Room in LA and the legendary Whisky. We did a short tour in 2024 opening for Julien-K and Grey Daze for a run in Texas. Last year we opened for Tantric and opened for Julien-K at The Whisky. Next month, we’re going back to open for Gene Loves Jezebel.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The biggest struggle over and above the pandemic, when we started, has been the effects of it on venues not only here but in many cities across the US. The options for venues showcasing original music have dwindled here locally and many venues we would’ve booked out of TX or Dallas have closed or changed formats. A huge paradigm seems to have shifted as a result of that time and habits have changed regarding frequenting venues to consume live music. It seems to be a cycle that will hopefully fade and bring about new opportunities.

As you know, we’re big fans of KAW Consulting. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
In my professional life, I run a successful software consulting business specializing in ERP (Oracle EnterpriseOne) implementations for small to mid-market companies. I have clients all over the world and some in DFW. I love the work I do and the value I’ve given my clients over the years, but in my heart of hearts, I’m a musician/artist first. It is my first love.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up in Northwest Louisiana, I was a typical kid involved in sports but I LOVED music enough to know that I wanted to play it. From my earliest memories, I can remember listening to albums or FM radio once I was able enough to run the stereo. My parents were big into Motown but I remember my most moving experience at a young age was hearing the likes of AC/DC, Ozzy, The Scorpions, and Rush on FM radio. I’m a drummer but remember being mesmerized by the playing of Randy Rhoads. I think he influenced me to a degree to want to accent what the guitar melody was doing in the song. I would say I was heavy into hard rock and metal of the day but was also a fan of traditional goth music. In fact, these days, goth music influences me more than just about anything else. Newer bands like Julien-K, Drab Majesty or even more classic bands like Depeche Mode or The Killing Joke are what I’m still into these days.
