Exploring Life & Business with Kimberley Dietrich of Mind Your Payroll LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimberley Dietrich.

Hi Kimberley, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My journey into owning an accounting firm really began in 2021, during one of the toughest seasons of my life. I was let go from my previous employer due to COVID-related financial cuts, and at that moment I had a choice — panic… or pivot. And honestly, it ended up being one of the biggest blessings in disguise.

With just $600, a laptop, and a whole lot of determination, I decided to build something of my own. I knew I wanted to create a company that treated clients like human beings, not numbers, and gave small business owners the kind of support I wished I had seen more of in the industry.

Those early days were scrappy — working long nights, taking every call, saying yes to every opportunity — but they shaped me. Slowly, the referrals grew… then the workload… then the reputation. Today, I’m proud to say my firm has grown to six employees, and for the first time, I get to be selective about the clients we take on. That’s something I truly appreciate, because it means we can focus on relationships, not volume.

Looking back, losing my job pushed me into discovering who I really was — a builder, a leader, an entrepreneur, and someone who can create opportunity out of chaos. My pleasure to share that growth, because it reminds me that even the hardest moments can turn into something fantastic.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The journey definitely wasn’t smooth. I started with very little, and in those early years I learned some tough lessons the hard way. I dealt with scammers, clients who didn’t pay, and situations where I fronted money for services before realizing I should’ve required payment upfront. Those moments were stressful and honestly a little defeating at times.

I also made the mistake of listening to the wrong people — bad advice can set you back more than you realize. I had an “advisor” in my path who were steering things for their own benefit instead of mine. That was a real turning point. I had to learn to trust my own judgment, protect my business, and stand firm in what was best for me and my clients. Those advisors are gone now, thankfully.

But every struggle sharpened me. They taught me boundaries, better systems, clearer contracts, and the confidence to run my company on my terms. And in a strange way, I appreciate those challenges, because without them, I wouldn’t be the businesswoman I am today.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Mind Your Payroll LLC started as a tiny seed — just me, $600, and a belief that small business owners deserved better support. Today, we’ve grown into a full-service accounting and payroll firm with a team of six, serving clients all over Texas and beyond. My pleasure to say we’ve built something that truly reflects both expertise and heart.

We specialize in S-Corp advisory, bookkeeping, payroll, tax strategy, and helping business owners make sense of their numbers in a way that actually empowers them. What we’re known for is our blend of accuracy, education, and genuine care. I don’t just give clients a number — I explain what it means, why it matters, and how it impacts their long-term goals. That’s something I really appreciate in our brand: the transparency.

What sets us apart is that we treat clients like real humans. We don’t upsell unnecessarily, we don’t overwhelm people with jargon, and we don’t take on clients who aren’t a great fit. We value relationships over volume, and that creates a completely different experience for business owners who’ve been burned by bigger firms.

Brand-wise, one of the things I’m most proud of is that we’re women-owned, community-focused, and built from the ground up without loans or investors. The reputation we’ve earned came from hard work, trust, and consistently showing up for people. And honestly, the fact that I started this business during a pandemic and turned it into a thriving, award-recognized firm is something that still feels fantastic.

For readers, I want them to know we’re more than “just bookkeeping.” We help business owners understand their financial story, stay compliant, grow confidently, and make smarter tax decisions. Whether someone is a brand-new startup or a multi-entity company, we bring the same level of attention, strategy, and care.

At the end of the day, Mind Your Payroll LLC is here to make accounting feel simpler, clearer, and on your side. And that’s the heart of our brand. We actually answer the phone too which is something not many businesses today can say.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
I definitely didn’t build this alone. My family has supported me in every way possible — emotionally, financially, and by reminding me to keep going on the days that felt heavy. They truly have been my backbone throughout this journey, and I appreciate them more than anything.

My son works for me part-time, and getting to share this business with him has been such a full-circle moment. Watching him pitch in, learn, and grow alongside the company is something that means the world to me. My mom also answers the phone for the business, and her kindness and steady voice help set the tone for how we treat our clients.

I’m also grateful to have my cousin, who works for me as a bookkeeper. She brings a level of trust, reliability, and shared family pride that strengthens our team culture every day. Having family members involved at different levels has created a grounded, supportive environment that feels fantastic.

Beyond family, I’m fortunate to have teammates who feel like extended relatives. Some of them I’ve known for many years — one I even worked with back in 1995. They showed up when I needed them, trusted my vision, and helped me build this company with loyalty and heart.

And of course, none of this would be possible without our amazing clients. Many believed in me long before the business looked like it does today. Their trust, their referrals, and their belief in our work have helped us grow into the company we are now — selective, stable, and thriving.
