Exploring Life & Business with Kimberly Wilson of WZUP Productions

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimberly Wilson.

Hi Kimberly, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started DJing during my deployment in Afghanistan in 2012. I am a music enthuses and I grew up listening to music every day and sometimes even all day long. It was a must for me to have music at my fingertips especially going to a desolate place during that time. I believe music is an expression of the soul. I believe music is stronger than any drug on the market and even those not on the market. Music is my therapy. While stationed in Afghanistan, I decided to play music in the Bagram Post Office from day one of my assignment. I received a lot of compliments about having the music, even the company commander was grateful. No one before me was doing this at that time and I just want to have a little background noise just for my pleasure. Each day when I come in to work and immediately after meetings, I headed downstairs and got the music started. So, the DJing came start to shape when I would ask for requests. Seeing Service Members and Civilian Contractors light up was joy was an awesome feeling. I created a moment where they connected with home even if it was for about 3 1/2 minutes. Day after Day playing requested music, changing the atmosphere, and creating a connection was powerful for me. I did not have turntables, DJ application, DJ-type speakers, CDs, streaming capabilities, or even a DJ name at the time. I DJ for 9 months with a silver and white I-pod Classic 16.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Becoming a DJ has not been a smooth road because I do not look like a DJ, act like a DJ, dress like a DJ, and in some cases, I am the wrong gender. When I first started getting booked for events, after introducing myself I would get the response “You’re the DJ” followed by a chuckle or even a laugh.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about WZUP Productions?
WZUP Productions was created March 2013 a month after being home from Afghanistan. I named my business after my Grandparents because they were married over 60 years. WZUP stands for Wilford & Zephyr Unity Productions. My company does more than playing music. We offer three services, DJing, Sound Engineering, and Video Production. WZUP Productions is currently supporting two different video podcasts to include streaming them live. The company is still finding its way and I am loving the journey. We get a lot of business just from word of mouth and referrals. Our biggest event we supported is TEDx Pleasant Grove January 2020, we provided video production services. I’m not sure what sets us apart from other companies because industry is overly saturated with various production companies. We are uniquely designed and professionalism is a must. We have done video production within Dallas, TX, Silicon Valley, CA, Key West, Florida, and we are always ready to travel for other events. We have DJ’d all over Dallas, TX, East TX, San Antonio, TX, Fort Worth, TX, and recently Atlanta, GA. We are most proud of being able to support any production project and/or event.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
My biggest supporters are my children, my parents, my brother, my sister-in-law, my nieces, my nephew, VIFM, and my church family. They have embraced me becoming a DJ as well as the creation of the company. Helped me set up and break down at any event even at a moment’s notice. They all play a special role with the company.
