Exploring Life & Business with Kris Weir of Texifornia

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kris Weir.

Hi Kris, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve always felt drawn to both my native state of Texas and the laid-back vibes of the West Coast. Texifornia was born out of my love of for unique finds that embodied both lifestyles. Growing up in Dallas, fashion came quick with a mother who loved the latest on-trend looks, and pushed her children to look their best. This idea flourished as I attended the University of Colorado, a seemingly out-of-place spot for my fashion identity to flourish. Wearing the clothes and accessories that had a ‘little more color’ or ‘bling’ as I would put it, solidified my identity as a Texas girl who craved a little bit of glam on hikes. Moving in and out of California in my 20s, a new sense of fashion and freedom emerged. I loved the way the west coast gave opportunity to matchless looks, where there wasn’t a mainstream and instead dressing the feeling of the look became more important. As I transitioned back to Dallas in 2008, my style had evolved as the combination of west coast individuality and Texas glam merged, but still the ‘where did you get that from?’ continued. In 2008 in Texas, I started my Real Estate career and met my significant other who encouraged me to excel in both my career but gain accessibility to my creative passion of fashion and design.

In 2017 I started designing jewelry and creating custom one-of-a-kind embellished jackets, and was met with an overwhelming response from others “where can I find these pieces”. Launching Texifornia as an online boutique for access to the pieces created a space for my love of fashion and creativity to thrive. In Dallas, it felt like a gap was there where luxurious feeling and unique statement pieces didn’t exist except in mass quantity corporate stores or at a price point not easily accessible to most. From that need, Texifornia-Everyday Luxury Collection was born; with a mix of one of kind custom-made statement pieces, along with a curated selection of apparel that not only looked luxe but felt supple and easy to wear. From the fabric textures to the cuts and style, we focused on the details that take a wardrobe staple to the next level at an accessible price point. Along with this collection we partnered with a female-owned hat maker out of Los Angeles, offering vegan suede and cactus leather hats, made in the USA. It is our goal that each one of our pieces are sustainable and offer timeless looks that transcend the ebb and flow of fast fashion and become staple pieces in our client’s wardrobe. In addition to our curated collection, Texifornia, as a lifestyle brand, offers showcased pieces from other small businesses, including Zelda Bea’s reimagined vintage bandanas, Alexander Ann’s showstopping agate adorned glass and barware, and custom-designed hand-beaded earrings in which we send proceeds to the makers.

As with any small business, Texifornia is my passion and one I am so fortunate to share with the world. It offers a chance to look at where we are as a company and internally as an extension of myself, in creating a future for the community to have a place to find unique offerings and feel good about what is in their closest and what feels good on their bodies. To quote a monologue that has always stayed with me ‘if you look good you feel better’, in every piece we offer we hope the client shares the same sentiments.

Texifornia as a brand continues to evolve and in 2020, we started showcasing our offerings at pop-ups throughout the DFW area. In meeting with our clients, my greatest joy comes from their excitement and enthusiasm in finding a place to shop that they can trust for new quality pieces for a special occasion or to wear every day that were not easily available before finding Texifornia.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I believe the quote begins with “smooth roads never made good drivers…”. Although I always felt a force in wanting to express my creativity in fashion, the substantial risk of a startup was a factor in launching Texifornia as a brand. I am very fortunate to have an outstanding support system from a young age that encouraged belief in my passion. In starting any company, you second guess your established notions and the acceptance into your vision. After several conferences with myself, I was encouraged by Crispen, my significant other, and Barbara, my mother, in an all-hands-on-deck ‘family meeting’ to pursue the passion that kept me up at night and find a way to bring my vision to market. Finding a way to combine both ethereal feeling clothing and statement selections was not an easy task. Once we started offering one-of-a-kind pieces, we hand-sewed every sequin, glasses required every bead be precise, and then there was the clothing design, a quality task within itself. The specifications for what I expected from my products took trial and error to bring to fruition and expanding collections in the middle of a supply chain epidemic only compounded the resources available. However, as a self-proclaimed risk seeker, I knew the end product would be a goal worth the time and research invested and prove worthy of the climb.

On personal levels, my biggest roadblock on this journey came last year as my mother and business partner passed away unexpectedly in August of 2021. In losing someone so close and such an integral part of the company, I doubted the ability to go forward in continuing the brand. However, her impact and her drive was what led me to be able to have the perseverance to strive to reach our goal as a company and in her honor, we excel at growth and continuation today. My mother was such an impactful and integral piece in making Texifornia the brand it is today and I know in her blessing we will continue on the path we both created.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Texifornia?
Texifornia is a lifestyle brand curating both women’s apparel and showcasing one of kind makers. In our curated apparel line, we strive for looks that transcend the norm and offer quality luxe feeling and looking pieces that give ‘everyday luxury’ at an attainable price point. From the fabrics and prints, we offer, to the handmade one of kind designs, Texifornia, is a brand that offers closest staples and head-turning ready to wear. Texifornia offers the ability to access unique designs, in luxe quality at an attainable price point and with a vision that “where did you get that?” will resonate. To help grow our surrounding local businesses we offer spotlight vendors and starting in 2021 offer hands-on Stylist Appointments, where we integrate or revision clients’ wardrobes. As a brand and owner of Texifornia, I am proud of the collective clientele and newcombers who make our growth such a pleasure and asset and truly have transformed our small business into the niche we are today. I love the ability to collaborate with other creatives to bring in fresh offerings to DFW. Our Stylist opportunity provides an advantage to those looking to streamline or grow their wardrobe into a singular impactful closet designed on their individuality at a fraction of the cost of a celebrity stylist. At Texifornia our motto stands without cadence as ‘Everyday Luxury’ for everyone.

What does success mean to you?
Success, I believe is a cadence between which mountains we’ve crossed and the ability to be prepared for the journey ahead. It’s amazing to have clients and friends supporting you on the journey but if you’re not prepared for the road ahead and all its misgivings the road becomes arduous and without mercy. At the end of the day success for myself and Texifornia is knowing the boundaries we cross continue to develop the company with passion, profitability, and personal resolution. Success to me is an ongoing journey to test the limits, in good faith knowing the next horizon is ever brighter.
