Exploring Life & Business with Laura Baez Torres of Laura Baez Torres Law

Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Baez Torres.

Hi Laura, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I was born in San Luis Potosi, Mexico in a small town called Rio Verde. My parents immigrated to the U.S. for a better life and brought me along for the ride. I am forever grateful they believed in the American dream because growing up in the U.S. has given me opportunities not available to me in my hometown.

I was raised in West Dallas, a small close-knit community, and attended some of our local magnets. Being a lawyer became a goal for me in middle school because I watched my own extended family struggle with the process. They decided for me that I was to become a lawyer, so I could help them. I went to George Barefoot Sanders Law Magnet for High school, and this solidified my desire to study the law. I became the first in my immediate and extended family to graduate from high school.

Financial Aid played a crucial role in my college decision and SMU offered me a great scholarship and financial aid package, so I stayed in Dallas for college. This is where I flourished! I became involved on campus and even met my spouse, Jake! This was a huge milestone for me because I became the first in my family to graduate from college.

After college, I joined Teach For American because I was moved by their purpose to close the achievement gap. I was a teacher for 3 years before deciding to go to law school at SMU.

Today, I own my own law firm and am dedicated exclusively to immigration law. I am pursuing my own American Dream, and I am helping other immigrants along the way.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
The biggest struggle along the way has been the fact that I have been the first in my family to graduate from high school, college, and law school. That means making mistakes and learning from them. That has propelled me to seek out mentors at every stage that have helped me make the best decisions. Without the values instilled in me by my parents and the mentors along my path, I would not have been able to figure out how to be an attorney.

Family has been an integral part of my journey. My husband, Jake, has been my biggest cheerleader and my children, Angelique and Esteban, have been my biggest motivation. My success is their success because I would not have been able to get through law school and opening up my own business without them.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I own a small boutique immigration law firm in Dallas, and I pride myself in the quality of my work and client experience. I offer many payment options for my clients so that my services are affordable and attainable. Furthermore, I specialize in immigration law, so they know that they will be speaking to an expert when they contract my office.

What matters most to you?
Family is the most important aspect of my life. As a result of this value, my business is dedicated to keeping families together and making sure that there is stability in the families I serve.

Additionally, I recognize the importance of accessible and affordable legal representation and pride myself in giving back to the community. I do pro bono legal work for the Dallas Volunteer Attorney Program and also help at Catholic Charities once a week.
