Exploring Life & Business with Lauren Kellison of Revelry Avenue

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren Kellison.

Hi Lauren, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My story started with my decision to pursue a career in ballet, which happened at a very young age. Not everyone decides to continue to pursue their childhood dreams, but I was one that did. I graduated with degrees in Performing Arts (my passion) and Media Studies (the ‘smart choice’) because it’s always good to have a backup plan, and I put myself through college by working a job in the hotel industry. Never did I think that the three would coincide.

Making a career in the arts doesn’t typically lend itself to a very financially comfortable lifestyle. So, a lot of us that work in the industry often have a second, or third job, to supplement our income. I found those second and third jobs in running social media and marketing for the ballet companies that I was dancing for, as well as working my way up the corporate ladder in the hotel industry until I was planning and running all kinds of events.

As the time came for me to step away from my performance career, and decide what it was I wanted to do for the rest of my life, I didn’t want to settle for doing a job that didn’t make me as happy in my day to day life as ballet had for the last 30 years. I found that the only surefire way that I could end up doing something I loved, was to create that job for myself. Thus I started my own company, one that provides social media and marketing services as well as event planning and coordination services. By starting this company, I set myself up to continue working two of the three jobs I thoroughly enjoyed, focusing on them full-time, and beginning the next chapter of my career.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Nothing worth doing comes easy, so of course, there have been challenges. There’s “smaller” challenges, of course, perception varies based on individual experience, but some of mine have included: picking out a name for my business, operational logistics, the bumps and kinks of doing things for the first time, etc. But my biggest challenge thus far has proven to be finding a level of confidence in myself, my mission, and my services that allows me to be successful and continue to grow my business. Starting something on your own can be a bit daunting at times and it’s been important for me to remember that I have been successful in the past and I can continue to create a flourishing career for myself into my future. My (cliche, but true) takeaway has been that though there may be challenges, there is no obstacle too big that you cannot overcome it if you are passionate and diligent.

We’ve been impressed with Revelry Avenue, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Revelry Avenue is a two-tiered business. There is a Marketing side that provides services from social media management and content scheduling, design of graphics, to website updating and management, and more, as well as an Events side that provides planning and day of coordination services for weddings, baby showers, bridal showers, birthday parties, and all kinds of events.

One of the most important things that I can offer my clients is a customized service. I don’t have a ‘one size fits all’ model. I work closely with each of my clients, providing them with a service that helps their event fit their vision, or helps their business grow and thrive. For marketing, I offer customized packages based on budget and needs. If a client only needs help with post design and scheduling for Instagram, we design a package that fits. If they need a little more, some website updates, and assistance posting to multiple social media platforms, and content creation, we design a package for that. On the other side of the business, weddings and events are such an individualized experience, everyone is different. I’m a planner and coordinator that can help bring a client’s vision to life, while keeping everything organized and timely, so it’s stress-free for them. My ultimate goal is to have my clients feel less stressed about their event or business tasks when they’re working with me.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
Of course, there are many people that I can thank for being advocates for my success, but there are two people in particular that I couldn’t have done this without. One is my husband, Kevan, who has played many supporting roles and deserves all the credit. From day 1 he’s been my biggest cheerleader, he’s constantly involved in pitching ideas and lending support, letting me know that I’m not doing this all by myself. He’s my unofficial business partner, and (most days) I’m glad to have him. The other is my friend Maggie, who’s a self-made entrepreneur as well. She started her own business a few years before I did, and she has been my ‘go-to’ girl for answers to questions I didn’t even know I would have pertaining to starting a business. She’s been an invaluable resource, mentor, and friend, and I’m lucky to have her. I am beyond grateful for these two, and for everyone else who has been in my corner and shown me support.
