Today we’d like to introduce you to Lee Nelson
Hi Lee, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My construction journey began in my teens helping my best friend’s father on his jobsites during weekends and summer breaks doing demolition, site cleanup, and low-man tasks. After graduating high school, I worked various blue-collar jobs where I learned many skills such as framing and welding. In 2015 I went to work for a contractor building steel buildings where I eventually was placed in charge of the construction crew and gained valuable construction knowledge of leadership, motivating a team, and project forecasting. After doing this for some time I reached the point where I had to make the decision to remain at the ceiling I had reached or move on to continue growing and improving. I chose the latter and was hired as an assistant superintendent for a commercial general contracting company in the metroplex. During my time with them I was fortunate enough to be a part of some incredible multi-million-dollar projects and work beneath a very knowledgeable and professional senior superintendent who took me under his wing and really developed me as a project supervisor. Eventually, I was placed on a box store remodel project working night shifts and being a newly married man, decided I needed to consider a change that would be better suited for family life, so I applied for a job at Mueller Incorporated as a material sales representative and was awarded the position. My time at Mueller was great but I was continually confronted with customers who had a poor experience with third-party contractors, and contractors who did not possess the confidence or competence to service their customers appropriately. After much thought and prayer, Cactus Construction Services was born with the ambition of providing old school customer service and satisfaction to a world that insists on doing things the quickest and cheapest way. Today we are a custom home building company that strives to make each customer experience as unique as the home we build for them. We also provide home remodeling services and turnkey metal buildings. My greatest joy is serving people and the community I live in. If you or someone you know is considering building, please reach out to me!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There is a reoccurring theme in my professional life and desiring something more. I continually found myself in a position where I took ownership and pride in the job I was doing, and the thought of “if I was in charge, this is how I would do it”. I received my construction degree at the school of hard knocks and am a firm believer that you need in the field experience to fully understand what it takes. I am fortunate enough to have worked as a laborer, material salesman, and project supervisor so I feel that I have a unique perspective on how to pull everything together for the overall success of a project and a customer. When people see the “glamorous life” of a business owner, they don’t get to see the years of early mornings, long days, heat, sweat, late nights, and confrontation. I wear these experiences like a badge of honor but also with the approach of humility because everyone needs the chance to learn, mess up, and be encouraged. I truly believe that the best strategy to leading is to serve. Pick up the hammer or broom and do the work that nobody else wants to do.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a custom home builder primary but also do remodeling and turnkey metal buildings for things like hobby shops, riding arenas, party barns, etc. As mentioned in other responses, I have a unique perspective on the construction industry that I believe helps me to serve my customers and work alongside my subcontractors in a way that most builders can’t do and don’t appreciate. I was raised by parents who told me to work hard and get a good paying job to take care of your family. I just didn’t really fit that mold and have always been excited about entrepreneurship and owning my own business.
Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
If you or someone you know is considering building a home, remodeling a home, or building a metal building you can reach out to receive a project estimate. If you or someone you know has a business in one of the various skilled trade groups of construction please contact me as I am always looking for folks to work with who are as passionate about what they do as I am. I do pay for referrals so if you send someone my way who ends up hiring me to build a project for them, I will send you a check or custom gift as a way to say thank you for supporting me! Plus, you want your loved ones to be taken care of and by sending them to me you can trust that someone is looking out for their best interest and satisfaction.
