Today we’d like to introduce you to Lesly Cerrillo.
Lesly, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’ve always loved everything beauty! As a little girl, I’d steal my mom’s makeup and put it on myself. I started doing my own hair back in 1st grade because my mom would always do the same hairstyle, and I wanted something different every day — so I started learning on my own.
When high school came around, I knew college wasn’t for me, but I also knew beauty was. Luckily, the high school I wanted to attend had a cosmetology program. I wasn’t exactly sure what I wanted to specialize in at first, but I knew that’s where I belonged.
After graduating in May 2022, I thought I wanted to become a barber, but since that required a separate license, I decided to use my cosmetology license and dive into hairstyling — and I’ve loved it ever since! That same year, in September 2022, I started working at Pixie Glam Studio, and that’s where my beauty journey truly began.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Absolutely not — in the beginning, it was one of the hardest things I’ve ever gone through. I had never had a job before, so everything was completely new to me.
When I started my apprenticeship at Pixie Glam, I also began my very first part-time job. I was working both at the same time — Pixie Glam from Tuesday to Saturday, 9 AM–3 PM, and Sam’s Club Monday through Sunday, 4 PM–9 PM. I barely had a day off unless a client canceled and it happened to line up with a day off from my part-time job (which only happened maybe twice).
For three months, that was my life — nonstop work. Then, in December, my apprenticeship ended, and I officially started as an independent stylist. Around the same time, I quit my part-time job because I thought I’d be busy with clients… but I was so wrong. That first month, I only had two clients — and just one in January. I regretted leaving my part-time job so much.
We’ve been impressed with Lesly looks , but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I’m a hairstylist located at Pixie Glam Studio! I specialize in dimensional balayage, blonding, color corrections, and layered haircuts. My signature service — and what I’m best known for — is my layered, bouncy haircuts that everyone has been loving lately!
What truly sets me apart is how much I care about my clients’ experience. I always take the time to listen to what they want and need. I know going to a new stylist for the first time can be nerve-wracking, especially if they’ve had a bad experience before, so I make it a priority to help them feel comfortable. I walk them through each step of the process to make sure they understand what I’m doing and feel confident that we’ll achieve the results they’re hoping for.
One thing I’m most proud of is how far I’ve come — pushing myself, stepping out of my comfort zone, and not giving up when things got hard. I’m grateful to be living my dream job, and I want every client — current and future — to know that I’ll always do my best to give them the best experience possible.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I feel like luck has played both good and bad roles in my journey. In the beginning, I had a lot of what felt like bad luck — things weren’t going how I imagined. When I first started, I thought I’d instantly be busy once I became an independent stylist, but that wasn’t the case at all. I had to face slow months, moments of doubt, and times where I questioned if I made the right choice leaving my part-time job.
But looking back, that “bad luck” actually pushed me to grow. It taught me patience, consistency, and the importance of believing in myself even when things felt uncertain.
Then came the good luck — meeting the right people, being surrounded by supportive coworkers at Pixie Glam Studio, and having clients who trusted me and helped me build my confidence and career. I think sometimes luck shows up in the form of opportunities, but you still have to be ready to put in the work when they come.
So overall, I’d say luck has played its part, but hard work, persistence, and passion have been the real reasons I’m where I am today.
