Today we’d like to introduce you to Lilly Pena.
Hi Lilly, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
I first started making simple syrups because I was disappointed with what flavors were available on the market and with how much sugar and additives are in most name-brand simple syrups. It was a hobby like any other, but I was making more than I needed, so I started giving my syrups to family and friends. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive and I got support for a business right away. I even had friends and family giving me ingredients from their own gardens for my syrups, and I have been inspired by them to locally source as much as possible. I owe my current business and success to my family and friends, who taste-tested, donated, and rallied for me along the way.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely has been a rocky road, especially in the beginning. I work a part-time job as well, so there were a lot of weeks where half my paycheck would go toward business permits, supplies, etc., and I had to be very frugal to get through. Additionally, there is always a bit of rockiness when making new flavors- the cost of ingredients and time without knowing how it will turn out is always a bit of a risk. But I am so thankful to have friends and family that have supported me every step of the way, whether that was giving me ingredients, constructive criticism, or business connections.
As you know, we’re big fans of Amaranthine Syrups LLC. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about the brand?
My business, Amaranthine Syrups LLC, offers handcrafted simple syrups that have 75% less sugar than regular simple syrup brands. We don’t use any artificial flavors or colors, and all our ingredients are Organic. We are hoping to set ourselves apart completely by having 100% locally sourced ingredients within the next few years, as well as doing seasonal and weekly flavors. We believe that simple syrup should be just that simple!
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I love Dallas for its diversity and culture. As someone who grew up in a somewhat small town, the diversity of Dallas overwhelmed me in the best way. I think Dallas is a great example of how communities can come together and create programs that benefit their local peoples in ways that they need. I see local champions of equity and diversity in this city every day, which is very heartening to me. However, I still believe there is much work to be done to make Dallas as equitable as possible, as there is everywhere. I am hopeful that change is still happening to make Dallas a more accepting and community-driven city.
