Exploring Life & Business with Luba Abdrazakova of THE DECOROOM

Today we’d like to introduce you to Luba Abdrazakova.

Luba Abdrazakova

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?

Greetings everyone! My name is Luba and I am so excited to share my story with you. My family moved to Dallas from Toronto, Canada in April 2020, right in the middle of pandemic due to job demands.

My passion for interior design and remodeling started early years. My dear father, now retired, when I was growing up had his residential construction business. Him being such a meticulous person, quality craftsmanship was a top priority. I was visiting construction sites, learning about various home improvement tools and materials, and seeing how space comes together. Quality of work and attention to details were just fascinating. But I chose to major in economics as I wanted to obtain a skillset that would allow me to succeed in any career path.

When I got my Masters in Business Economics and Postgraduate in Strategic Marketing, I was focusing on building my career in corporate world. Despite on numerous compliments about design style, aesthetics, and creativity, interior design was more of a hobby at that time.

I believe everything happens for a reason, and that reason causes change. So, when the opportunity came to relocate to Dallas, it was a bittersweet feeling to leave, but I was excited about new ventures and what the future holds. I knew at that time that I will focus on interior design not only because I have passion, creative thinking, and business acumen. I will be a part of something meaningful: being able to reimagine spaces for people to call it home.

That’s how THE DECOROOM was formed in January 2021. Meaning of THE DECOROOM comes from combining “decor” and “room,” and “eco” stands for focusing on using sustainable and eco-friendly materials for our remodels and interior design projects. Especially during first years, it is a challenge to navigating the highs and lows of entrepreneurship. There is no script on how to run your business; every decision is a calculated risk. But one thing I learned – no matter how challenging it can be sometimes, have a goal and work hard to achieve it. Consistency is the key, and your hard work will pay off.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Oh my, where do I start! Challenges are an excellent opportunity for growth (although it doesn’t feel like it at the moment when you are facing a challenge). And I would be lying if I said it was a breeze to start and operate the business from the get-go. But despite on all obstacles, I will not change a single thing as I consider it as experience. Navigating a new business is a struggle on its own. People give their opinions and advice, but that doesn’t mean it will work for you and your business. The very first client, the very first project – you want to bend backward to prove you can do it, and it usually ends up not in your favor. That was the first challenge from what we learned to value our time and knowledge. We offered complimentary consultations from the beginning and that backfired multiple times because if you don’t value your time – how your potential client will value it? Once we started charging for consultations, we saw the change. One time, we had a client who had a very tight budget and really wanted to work with us. I was on the fence and had not a good feeling, but I consulted with a contractor, and we made a one-time exception (once and for all). Any guesses what happened? At the end, client was not happy with the result although we signed off renders and all process along the way. We learned that you don’t need to say “yes’ to every project that comes your way. Initial consultation is also an opportunity to determine if this is a good fit for both client and designer.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about THE DECOROOM?
THE DECOROOM Interior Design, founded in 2021, is a full-service interior design company specializing in residential interiors.

Our design style can be described as European minimalist and characterized by simplicity, functionality, and focused on quality, craftsmanship, and details.

Our aesthetics seek to balance clean lines, a monochromatic neutral color palette (create a calm and relaxing atmosphere), lots of natural light, and natural materials (to provide warmth and texture to a space) with functionality and comfort.

The key to achieving the minimalist look lies in the phrase “less is more.”

We also take pride in selecting eco-friendly and sustainably sourced materials, ensuring we create not only beautiful but safe environments in every home.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Here are our top 3 goals for the next 3 years:

1. Collaborating with influencers not only in Dallas, TX

2. Bring awareness about European minimalist interior design style to our community and beyond
