Exploring Life & Business with Lyn Skibell of Skibell Fine Jewelry

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lyn Skibell

Hi Lyn, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I am an Austin native who has worn many hats throughout my life. I married Charles Skibell in 2009, and though he has since passed away, his impact remains a significant part of my journey. Today, I am proud to be a jeweler and owner of Skibell Fine Jewelry, which is approaching its 30th anniversary in Dallas.

My story began at The University of Texas at Austin, where I pursued a degree in nursing. However, my true passion was always acting, and it was this love that first brought me to Dallas. I enjoyed some success in the arts, but eventually found myself transitioning into a career in Sales within the Medical Field.

Each chapter in my life has been shaped by the people I’ve met and the opportunities I’ve embraced. It’s amazing how unexpected paths can lead to fulfilling destinations. I never imagined that these experiences would one day lead me to become the proud owner of a thriving jewelry business, but here I am!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Like any business with a rich history, our journey at Skibell Fine Jewelry has had its share of challenges. While we’ve enjoyed many successes, we’ve also faced hurdles that have shaped who we are today.

One significant challenge has been adapting to changing market trends and consumer preferences. The jewelry industry is constantly evolving, and staying ahead requires innovation and a willingness to embrace new designs and technologies. We’ve worked hard to ensure that our offerings resonate with both younger generations and those seeking timeless pieces.

Additionally, the impact of economic fluctuations has posed challenges. During downturns, luxury purchases can decline, making it essential for us to remain agile and responsive to our clients’ needs. We’ve focused on building strong relationships and maintaining our reputation for excellent service, which has helped us weather these storms.

Despite these challenges, we’ve found that our commitment to customer service and community relationships has been our greatest asset. The friendly competition among jewelry stores in Dallas fosters a collaborative spirit that keeps us motivated and inspired.

Overall, while the road hasn’t always been smooth, each challenge has presented an opportunity for growth and improvement. We’re proud of how far we’ve come and excited about what the future holds.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Skibell Fine Jewelry is proud to be a fourth-generation jewelry store rooted in tradition and community. While we offer a full range of jewelry services, we specialize in estate jewelry, making us a go-to destination for those seeking unique, timeless pieces.

What sets us apart is the sense of camaraderie within the jewelry community in Dallas. We consider our fellow jewelers’ friendly competitors, and a colleague recently remarked that we have the most beautiful estate jewelry in the city—a compliment we truly value!

This year, we’re seeing a growing trend in redesigning heirloom pieces. Each week, we help young couples transform family jewelry into stunning creations that reflect their personal styles. Whether it’s engagement rings, wedding bands, or complete wedding sets, we love turning cherished memories into future treasures.

In addition to our redesign services, we also provide appraisals, repairs, and buying and consigning jewelry.

Above all, we take immense pride in our customer service. Our friendly, laid-back atmosphere ensures that every client feels welcome and valued. We go the extra mile to meet our clients’ needs and help them find exactly what they want, when they want it.

At Skibell Fine Jewelry, we’re not just about making sales; we’re about building lasting relationships and creating beautiful pieces that hold meaning for generations to come.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
Someone once said, ‘You make your own luck.’ Here at Preston Center in Dallas, Texas, we feel incredibly fortunate. The clients who evolve into lifelong friends represent our greatest good fortune. Carrying the ‘Skibell’ name is indeed a stroke of luck. With a rich history rooted in Texas and Mississippi, we continue to draw clients from near and far who seek to collaborate with us.

Even as I look back on retrieving photos for this article, I am mindful of the Skibell journey. It all goes back to Charles Skibell, then Clyde and I and our team, as we moved forward with the store in our new location.
One of our clients (friends) was in last week, he reminded me that we are on a fourth generation of their family weddings! How lucky is that? One family who has been with us for four generations. That is EXCEPTIONALLY good luck.
We are still here, impacting clients lives and they us.

It is a beautiful tribute to the legacy of Skibell Fine Jewelry. The idea of “making your own luck” really shines through in the journey and relationships we have built over the years. From Charles’s vision to the present day, the dedication, passion, and genuine care for clients have been pivotal in creating such strong bonds. Four generations of one family trusting Skibell Fine Jewelry is a true testament to the lasting impact we have had on people’s lives.

It is incredibly rewarding to see how the Skibell name has grown and evolved, while still honoring its roots. The sense of history, community, and loyalty our store fosters are something that goes beyond just business—it is about creating cherished memories and being part of people’s most special moments. Our presence at Preston Center is not just a stroke of luck but a reflection of decades of commitment to excellence and connection.

Here is to the continued good fortune of Skibell Fine Jewelry and the many generations to come! I am so grateful!
