Exploring Life & Business with Mahfuzur Rahman of Frisco Dental Studio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mahfuzur Rahman.

Hi Mahfuzur, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I have been a dentist for about 8 years now, but my journey to dentistry is a unique one. I have been deathly afraid of dental visits my whole life; it’s this fear that encouraged me to explore the profession so I could be a driving force in innovating and changing the field. I built my practice 5 months ago, and we are a judgment-free safe haven for dental scaredy cats. Using my past experiences as a patient, I designed the space to immerse the patient’s sense of smell, hearing, and sight. Our spa-like space doesn’t look, smell or sound like a typical medical dental office. We feature art from local artists by being a partner gallery for the Visual Arts Guild of Frisco. We offer a complimentary comfort menu that patients can use to curate their visit. We use aromatherapy, neck pillows, blankets, headphones, and warm towels to create a very unique sensory experience. For us, the expectation is that the dentistry should be exceptional, but our true passion is building on top of this to provide next-level customer service and patient experience.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Dentistry is interesting in that you get to wear the hat of a doctor and an entrepreneur at the same time. On any given day you are a healthcare provider, but you are also the marketing director, the HR director, social media director, architect, designer, operations manager. On top of this, we have been blessed to have two beautiful kids, so for me, the biggest struggles have been balancing these different roles. I am a fiercely entrepreneurial person, but the challenge often is balancing the vision for the business and the vision for our family.

We’ve been impressed with Frisco Dental Studio, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We are a small boutique dental practice in Frisco that’s a haven for folks with dental anxiety. Despite being a dentist, I have a lot of anxiety during dental visits because of some terrible experiences as a child. My personal negative experiences with dental offices have shaped how I designed and structured my office. We have a saying at our practice; we are a customer service company that happens to also do high-quality dentistry. Patients don’t remember the dentistry; they remember how you made them feel, how empowered they felt, how they were taken care of.

We curate every patient visit with a complimentary comfort menu where the patient is in control; they can decide which amenities they want to add to make their visit more comfortable. Our patients love the warm and inviting spa vibes at the office.

We are also a partner gallery for the Visual Arts Guild of Frisco. Every month we do art pop-ups featuring local artists, coffee, and drinks. The events help give exposure to local artists, and it also helps remove the stigma around dental offices. Visitors are able to come check out the space in a non-clinical setting and be inspired by the space and the art

What makes you happy?
Dentistry has a huge burnout problem. I experienced some serious burnout over the last few years while working for other offices as an associate dentist. There was this constant pressure to do more procedures and see more patients; it truly felt like a hamster wheel. One of the reasons I quit my last job and took the leap of faith to open my own business was to get more fulfillment and happiness. Professional happiness and fulfillment for me is being able to take care of patients in an ethical manner, spending time educating them, empowering patients to take charge of their oral health. As an entrepreneur, I also get a lot of professional fulfillment crafting a business vision and then watching the business grow and mature.

For me, personal fulfillment and happiness are just as important as the professional. My wife and I are very active; we love working out, hiking, biking, camping, and travelling with our kids. We designed the practice to allow us flexibility so we can spend time being outdoors and exposing our kids to new cultures and experiences. We measure our happiness by how fulfilled we are as a family life, not by the amount of money we make
