Today we’d like to introduce you to Mary Murphy.
Hi Mary, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
In 1999, Mary Murphy began her journey in education and entrepreneurship when she was entrusted with ownership of a licensed childcare facility—despite having no prior experience in childcare at the time. While working as a lobby teller and encoder at a credit union, she recognized the opportunity to build something meaningful and stepped confidently into business ownership. With no advertising and no exterior signage, she grew enrollment from six children to forty-five, demonstrating early on her ability to lead, scale, and create demand through excellence alone.
Mary hired a director while pursuing and obtaining her own director certification, successfully operating the center for nearly eight years. In 2008, after relocating from East Texas to Plano, Texas, she continued her work in education at a learning center, where she earned Montessori certification. During this time, she developed assistant teacher guidelines and created her proprietary Multiplication Rhythm System, an innovative approach that enabled four-year-olds to understand multiplication and division concepts.
After four years in the learning center environment, Mary began tutoring students after work. As her client base quickly grew to three students, she made the decision to leave traditional childcare and tutor full time. She has since homeschooled students not enrolled in public school, tutored after-school learners, and taught every subject across all grade levels. While her early clients came through online advertisements, her practice is now built entirely on word-of-mouth referrals—a testament to her results and reputation throughout the Dallas–Fort Worth area. Her reach extends beyond Texas, with students taught virtually via Zoom in cities such as Austin and Nacogdoches, as well as in New York and internationally.
As demand for her services increased, Mary expanded her practice into a tutoring firm, hiring and managing contract tutors to support client overflow. At its peak, the firm employed up to six tutors simultaneously. Her vision is to grow the firm into a nationally recognized tutoring organization, becoming a trusted, go-to educational resource in every state.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There have been challenges, but nothing that I couldn’t handle.
I am determined to keep my peace. Therefore, I don’t allow negative circumstances or people to get under my skin

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
I encourage parents to never compare their children with siblings or other children because I’ve learned that they are all different and they learn at their own pace.
