Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Garrett.
Hi Michael, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
For more than 30 years, I worked in corporate operations, helping companies improve efficiency through Lean manufacturing, Six Sigma, and process improvement. My career taught me how to build systems that could solve problems at scale.
When I transitioned into the nonprofit world, I quickly realized something that surprised me. Most organizations weren’t struggling because they lacked passion. They were struggling because they lacked systems.
That realization led me to found Trusted World in 2014 with a simple idea: instead of becoming another charity serving people directly, we would build the infrastructure that allows hundreds of other organizations to serve people better.
Today, Trusted World partners with more than 850 schools, police departments, nonprofits, and government agencies across North Texas, providing clothing, food, and essential resources at no cost to the professionals helping families every day.
Along the way, I’ve become passionate about what I call Preventive Poverty®—the belief that many crises can be prevented if we intervene early with the right resources before small problems become life-changing ones.
More recently, that same systems mindset has led me into artificial intelligence and software development. I’m building technology that helps nonprofits operate more efficiently, make better decisions, and ultimately serve more people. Whether it’s logistics, software, or leadership, the goal has always been the same: build systems that help people help people.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, but the biggest challenges weren’t the ones most people expect.
One of the hardest parts has been challenging long-held assumptions. The nonprofit sector is full of passionate people doing incredible work, but it’s also an industry where “this is how we’ve always done it” can be difficult to overcome. From the beginning, I believed that building better systems could dramatically increase the impact of every dollar donated and every volunteer hour invested. Not everyone immediately saw that vision.
There were also practical challenges. Building trust with hundreds of partner organizations takes years. You have to consistently deliver on your promises. If a school counselor or police officer is depending on you to help a family, “almost” isn’t good enough.
As we’ve grown, another challenge has been learning to lead a rapidly expanding organization. The skills needed to serve 40 partners are very different from the skills needed to support more than 850. Every stage of growth has required me to rethink processes, technology, leadership, and sometimes even my own assumptions.
Looking back, those challenges shaped Trusted World into what it is today. They forced us to build stronger systems, measure our impact more carefully, and stay focused on our mission of helping people help people.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Trusted World exists because we believe the people already serving our communities should have better resources.
Instead of serving individuals directly, we equip the professionals who are already working on someone else’s behalf—school counselors, police officers, social workers, nonprofits, veterans organizations, and many others. By strengthening the people on the front lines, we can help far more families than we ever could on our own.
Today, Trusted World partners with more than 850 organizations across North Texas, providing clothing, food, toiletries, and other essential resources at no cost to the organizations we serve. Our goal is simple: when a trusted professional identifies someone in need, they should be able to get help quickly and without unnecessary barriers.
What sets us apart is that we’ve built a system instead of another program. We focus on logistics, technology, inventory management, and partnerships so that hundreds of organizations can spend more time helping people instead of searching for resources.
One philosophy that has become central to our work is what I call Preventive Poverty®. Too often, communities respond only after a family reaches a crisis. We believe many of those crises can be prevented by identifying needs earlier and providing the right resources before a temporary setback becomes long-term instability.
Brand-wise, I’m most proud that Trusted World has become known for reliability. Whether someone is a donor, volunteer, school counselor, or police officer, they know we’ll do everything we can to keep our promises. Trust isn’t built through marketing—it is earned through consistent action, day after day. That’s ultimately what our name represents.
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
If there’s one thing I’d like readers to remember, it’s this: every one of us has the ability to change someone’s life.
You don’t have to start a nonprofit. You don’t have to be wealthy. You simply have to use whatever talents, resources, or influence you’ve been given to make your community a little stronger than you found it.
I’ve spent much of my career building systems because I believe people accomplish more when they work together than when they work alone. That’s true in business, it’s true in nonprofits, and it’s true in our communities.
I also believe we’re entering one of the most exciting periods of innovation in our lifetime. Artificial intelligence, better data, and smarter technology have the potential to transform how organizations serve people—not by replacing compassion, but by amplifying it. My hope is that more leaders embrace these tools to create greater impact and solve problems that once seemed impossible.
At the end of the day, whether I’m leading Trusted World, developing new technology, or speaking with community leaders, my goal is always the same: help people help people.
