Today we’d like to introduce you to Molly Bornstad.
Hi Molly, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
The story of Mold Dog USA is a testament to the power of a personal crisis that ignited a professional purpose. The company was founded by three individuals with a unique blend of passion and expertise: Molly & Ken Bornstad and Lane Simmons.
Their journey began about three years ago when Molly and Ken were living their dream, traveling the country in their renovated van. However, their adventure was abruptly put on hold when Molly’s health took a severe turn after they rented a home in Florida. What followed was a long, frustrating odyssey of misdiagnoses and debilitating illness, as Molly’s immune system went into overdrive.
This health crisis ignited a fire in Molly & Ken. Her personal search for answers led her to discover K9 mold detection as the best way to find the invisible culprit in her home. It was during this time that they personally hired Lane, a K9 handler with an impressive background. Lane brings an unparalleled level of expertise to every job, with seven years of K9 handling experience, including five as a dual-purpose police K9 handler before specializing in mold detection.
Lane, Molly, and Ken all recognized the desperation of countless other families facing the same struggle. They decided to team up, combining passion born from personal experience with Lane’s professional rigor, to create a company that provides the exact solution they once needed themselves.
Today, Mold Dog USA is a living embodiment of that journey. Their mission is to make expert, accurate mold detection accessible and affordable for every family in America. Driven by a deep empathy for what they’ve been through, they are committed to helping others get the definitive answers and peace of mind they deserve.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No, it has certainly not been a smooth road. The foundation of Mold Dog USA was built on a personal health crisis, but the business itself was forged through immense sacrifice from the entire team.
For Lane, the road has been a test of physical and mental endurance. It’s a life of constant travel, spending four days a week in a new city to provide expert inspections with their K9 Cooper. While incredibly rewarding, the 15+ hour days and frequent travel mean sacrificing precious time with his family and is physically taxing.
Molly and Ken face a different set of challenges. It’s a relentless schedule of working 12+ hour days, often long after the inspection is over. Their time is a constant juggle between managing social media, B2B relations, curating partnerships and digital products, handling phone calls with desperate clients and travel arrangements, and troubleshooting the inevitable tech stack issues that come with a growing, nationwide business.
These struggles and sacrifices, however, are a testament to the team’s unwavering commitment to their mission. Every challenge they face—from the miles on the road to the late nights on the phone—is fueled by their passion for helping families find answers and a path to a healthier life.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Mold Dog USA was born from a desire to do more than just build a business—co-founders Molly, Ken, and Lane wanted to set the industry standard for K9 mold detection and make a positive impact. Their approach is rooted in an unwavering empathy, driven by the philosophy of “I’ve been in your shoes.” They believe the most important message a client can receive is, **”We believe you. You’re not crazy.”**
The standard they’ve set is built on a unique combination of personal experience and professional expertise. Lane, the team’s certified Mold Assessment Technician, brings **seven years of K9 scent detection experience** to every job. His rigorous background and his dual role as both a licensed handler and a human inspector ensure an unmatched level of accuracy.
This is why a client receives two inspections in one. Lane physically inspects attics, crawlspaces, and every nook and cranny of the home, looking for visual indicators of water damage. This is followed by a second, highly specialized inspection with Cooper, a K9 imprinted on all genus of molds commonly found in water-damaged buildings. This powerful partnership provides an unparalleled level of certainty for clients who have exhausted all other options.
The company’s business model is a reflection of this mission. Mold Dog USA proudly offers all-inclusive pricing that covers their nationwide travel, making their expert services available to anyone, no matter how remote their location. They are also actively expanding, with a goal to establish a presence in major metropolitan areas around the country to make their services even more accessible and affordable in the future.
