Hueman Sol was born from a moment of truth. I remember feeling exhausted — not just from my corporate job in marketing partnerships at the NBA, but from the subtle and not-so-subtle messages society sends about melanin. I kept hearing us described as “light” or “dark,” and it felt limiting… almost like our beauty needed to be categorized before it could be appreciated.
I wanted something different. I wanted language that affirmed us. Language that felt warm, loving, and rooted in pride. That’s where the earliest idea for Hueman Sol began. It was a desire to rewrite how we talk about ourselves and how we see our own skin.
In my tiny kitchen, late at night after work, I started experimenting. Researching ingredients. Taking classes. Learning from failed batches. And eventually, creating formulas that felt like a warm hug to the skin. Sol Butter and Sol Crème became more than products. They became ritual. They became a moment of softness. For me, it’s a statement that melanin didn’t need “brightening” or “correcting” to be beautiful.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. When I launched my crowdfunding campaign, it felt like my first real failure. People loved the idea of Hueman Sol, but not enough to support it. I raised only a fraction of what I needed, and it was heartbreaking. It taught me early that not everyone will believe in your dream the way you do, even the people you would normally expect.
After that, I had to build everything from the ground up. I started with zero knowledge of formulation. I didn’t know how to create even the most basic product, so I committed myself to learning. I researched, studied, took classes, tested, failed, and tried again. Every skill I have today came from countless hours of practice, mistakes, and breakthroughs.
I also experienced many vendor challenges. There was lack of transparency, use of the wrong ingredients, and even people who disappeared in the midst of legal agreements. As frustrating as those moments were, they became turning points. Every time I wanted to rely on an expert, I felt God nudging me to lean in and learn the skill myself. That’s how I became my own formulator, my own fragrance blender, and the hands behind every Hueman Sol creation.
All of these challenges shaped me. They strengthened me, humbled me, and stretched me in ways I didn’t expect. They also built the resilience, faith, and creativity that define Hueman Sol today.

Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
One of my favorite childhood memories is from when I lived in the Boston suburbs. Our neighborhood was full of kids, and my siblings and I were inseparable from the friends we made on our block. All we needed was the outdoors and each other. We played flashlight tag late into the night, freeze tag at the bus stop before school, and we even taught each other how to ride bikes. It was the truest definition of a ’90s childhood, full of simple joys, and connection. Those days taught me how meaningful community can be, and I think a lot of that warmth and togetherness still lives in the heart of who I am and the brands I create today.
