Today we’d like to introduce you to Myer Johnson.
Myer, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My journey hasn’t been glamorous or easy, and it definitely didn’t start with a perfect plan. I was first introduced to the tax industry back in 2013 by people I trusted, considered friends, who promised to help me succeed but never followed through.. At the time, I didn’t realize how common that experience can be when you’re new, hungry, and trying to find your footing. That early disappointment could have ended my interest altogether, but instead, it pushed me to look elsewhere. That setback taught me early on that not everyone who cheers for you is truly invested in your growth.
After that experience, I began meeting people in the tax industry who actually stood on their word. Through them, I started preparing taxes as a side hustle. I had no formal training, no long term vision, and I didn’t take it as seriously as I should have. I was simply trying to make ends meet and figure things out as I went. Just trying to survive more than build.
Everything changed in 2015 when I was introduced to a company that provided professional tax training. For the first time, I committed to learning the business the correct way. I worked with them during the 2016 and 2017 tax seasons, starting out earning just 25% of my preparation fees. Through consistency, discipline, and a strong work ethic, I grew my client base to about 35 clients during the 2016 tax season and eventually increased my earnings to 35%. 2017 my clientele increased even more and my earnings increased to the 40% cap the company offered. That was my last year working with this particular company.
Because people respected how I showed up not just for the work, but for my clients I was able to move forward and negotiate higher profits an additional 10% over the next two years with a different company. That momentum led me to partner with a former business associate and open our own tax company. This was a major turning point. For the first time, I wasn’t just preparing taxes, I was teaching others how to do them, building a team of my own, and helping people create income opportunities through the tax industry.
Ironically, I realized how much I myself had never been formally educated when it came to doing taxes the correct way starting out. Instead of ignoring that, I took responsibility. I invested in learning, improving, and then sharing that knowledge so others could make money in the tax industry without feeling lost or misled the way I once did.
That partnership eventually came to an end after the 2025 tax season, but it didn’t break me, it clarified me. I walked away from a company I invested in, an office location I helped establish, and a business I helped build from the ground up. From that experience, Refund Maniacs Pro was born. It represents not just a company, but everything I’ve learned along the way: resilience, accountability, and the importance of doing things with integrity. What started as a struggle has turned into purpose, and today I’m proud to help others succeed through honesty, education, and real support.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, it definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. My journey has been shaped by trial and error, setbacks, and moments where I had to learn things the hard way. Early on, I struggled with a lack of proper guidance and mentorship, which led to mistakes, confidence, and not fully understanding the business side of the tax industry. I’ve learned the hard way that working hard doesn’t always mean you’re working smart. I had to learn how to walk away without losing myself.
In 2018, I launched Vogue Hair Showroom & Salon, and we opened our doors in 2019. The salon was a major milestone, but it ultimately closed in 2024. That experience was difficult, but it taught me invaluable lessons about leadership, operations, and perseverance. It reminded me that not every business will last, but every business can teach you something that makes you stronger.
I bought my first real estate investment in 2023, which was a major accomplishment. While the project was successfully completed in 2024, hiring the wrong contractor caused the profit to go to the contractor. That experience was tough, but it taught me the importance of diligence, vetting, and surrounding myself with the right people. I now offer a digital E-book for purchase that’s based solely on my experience.
I’ve faced challenges navigating partnerships, trust, and learning when to advocate for myself. There were times when I invested my time, energy, and resources into situations that didn’t align with my long term vision. Walking away from those situations was difficult, but necessary for my growth.
Another major struggle was realizing that passion alone isn’t enough you need education, structure, and accountability. Once I accepted responsibility for what I didn’t know and committed to learning and improving, everything began to change. Each obstacle forced me to become more disciplined, more strategic, and more intentional about how I built my business.
Looking back, every challenge played a role in shaping who I am today. The road wasn’t smooth, but it was purposeful, and it prepared me to build something rooted in integrity, clarity, and real support for others. Today, I don’t just measure success by income or growth, I measure it by alignment, integrity, and the impact I’m able to have on others. It hasn’t been a cakewalk, but it has made me stronger, clearer, and more prepared for the path I’m on now. That is why I’m so passionate about educating others based off my mistakes and real life experiences.
As you know, we’re big fans of Refund Maniacs Pro. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Refund Maniacs Pro is a tax preparation and education company built to serve both clients and aspiring tax professionals with honesty, structure, and real support. We specialize in accurate, compliant tax preparation while also providing education and training for individuals who want to build sustainable income in the tax industry the right way.
What sets us apart is our foundation. Refund Maniacs Pro was created from real experience learning through trial, error, and growth, so our approach is rooted in transparency and education, not shortcuts or hype. Brand wise, I’m most proud of the trust we’ve built. Our clients know they’re being guided with integrity, and our trainees know they’re receiving practical knowledge, not just theory. We emphasize accountability, compliance, and confidence, ensuring that everyone we work with understands not only what to do, but why it matters.
I want readers to know that Refund Maniacs Pro is more than a tax company, it’s a brand built on purpose. We are committed to doing things the correct way, creating opportunities through education, and helping others grow with clarity and confidence. Our mission is simple: to elevate the standard in the tax industry while helping people succeed honestly and sustainably. What drives me is impact. I’ve experienced what it feels like to be undertrained, undervalued, and unsupported, and I’ve made it my mission to ensure the people I serve, both clients and professionals never feel that way.
Any big plans?
My future plans are focused on expanding not just my business, but the opportunities I can create for my team. I want to lead my team into additional income streams outside of taxes, empowering them to build wealth and financial freedom in multiple ways.
I’ve already invested in real estate and plan to continue growing that portfolio through my Real Estate company My Lux Properties Inc. Real estate has been a major part of my long term strategy, and I’m excited to fully pick that back up as I scale and stabilize the business.
I’m also actively learning about business credit and business funding where I’m collaborating with the owner of Credit Genie, and I plan to introduce those strategies to my team so they can build stronger, more sustainable businesses of their own. My goal is to create a company culture where growth is continuous, education is encouraged, and financial independence is attainable for everyone involved.
Ultimately, I want Refund Maniacs Pro to be more than a tax company, it’s a launchpad for entrepreneurship, wealth building, and long term success.
