Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole Wright.
Hi Nicole, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
A desire to help others with health and wellness has been a passion of mine since I was a young girl. I am a third generation nurse and have always been curious on what individuals can do to improve their own health and quality of life. After working in the emergency department and intensive care unit for years, you see first hand the importance of preventative health and how it impacts your overall wellness. It all started a few years ago, when a good friend of mine introduced me to cannabidiol or CBD.
As like most individuals who first get introduced to the substance, I thought it was weed and was unsure of the effects and potential benefits. My friend explained to me that it was indeed not marijuana, the product she offered had zero THC and was not going to get me high. But why CBD? CBD has been shown in a significant amount of research studies to reduce inflammation, lower pain and help with anxiety and stress. All great things in my opinion and I was curious to see if this “magical” oil would help with a foot injury that I had from marathon training years prior.
I was a runner. Not just any runner, I was a passionate runner. I ran cross country and track in high school and continued to sign up for 5k’s and half marathons as an adult. While training for the Boston Marathon in 2016, I sustained an injury to my foot causing osteoarthritis. CBD may reduce inflammation and decrease my pain? With basically no side effects? And it may lower my stress? I was very curious at this point, but also very skeptical. After taking the tincture for five days, I woke up and felt amazing. Not only was the pain and inflammation in my foot almost completely gone, but my joints overall felt great. Like I had just got done with a 45 minute yoga session.
My step-father, Dale, had also been using CBD for his chronic back pain. He suffered from a condition called Ankylosing Spondylitis, which is a type of chronic arthritis of the joints and spine. He was a firm believer in CBD and its benefits. Dale had stopped taking his prescriptive pain medication, which had multiple side effects, after incorporating CBD into his daily routine. A huge step in the right direction for his health.
Together, Dale and I wanted to bring high quality CBD products to our own community. So they too could experience a relief in pain, inflammation, stress, anxiety and insomnia. Lone Star Naturals LLC was created in 2019, a family owned and operated business in Denton, Texas! We have now been in operation for over two years and have helped thousands of customers along the way!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Oh, where do I start with the challenges and lessons. I am not sure if anything was easy, mostly challenges and so many lessons that we learned starting this company up. Perseverance, hard work and grit are all good characteristics to have when starting your own business. I definitely recommend taking at least a mini course on Entrepreneurship 101 or read “Small Business for Dummies” because there are so many aspects and details to starting up a business, especially when it involves a brick and mortar store.
Since CBD is a part of the cannabis family and a close relative to marijuana, there is so much stigma associated with the product. A lot of people are “canna-curious” about CBD and other cannabinoids, but there is definitely a lot of education involved in overcoming the ignorance. There are so many over the counter and prescription medications that people do not hesitate to take, despite all of the side effects, but when you introduce a natural substance from the cannabis family, some waver.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Lone Star Naturals was founded in 2019 by myself and my step-father, Dale. We had a passion to help others through the gift of something natural. We wanted to bring high quality, organic and third party lab tested CBD products to our community. From the beginning, it has been our goal and mission at Lone Star Naturals to promote health and wellness in our community through education in a warm, welcoming environment. I believe we differ from other CBD shops in the area with our focus on education. We will sit down with customers, sometimes up to 15 minutes, to answer all of their questions and explain the many wonderful benefits of CBD. We are also a massage establishment and offer CBD massages by our wonderful licensed massage therapists. Whether it helps from chronic aches and pains to anxiety, massage therapy is a wonderful complementary tool to overall wellness.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
How can you live life to the fullest without taking risks? How boring would life be without risk? Would you go on wondering how things could be different? I choose to live life with no regrets. Starting a business is a huge risk. Putting hundreds of thousands of dollars into an investment that potentially could yield no return is a massive risk. I have taken many risks over my life time and hope to take many more. You learn from taking risks.
However, taking risks is not the same as intentionally making bad decisions. I believe you can take educated risks with preparation. Having children is taking a risk. You are now completely responsible for other human beings. Going to nursing school was a risk. What if I fail my classes? Getting my pilot’s license was a risk. What happens if I forget what to do and my engine fails? Being a flight nurse has probably been the biggest risk taking task in my life, but also the most rewarding. Helicopter EMS is by far one of the most dangerous professions out there. Aside from those dangers, I get faced with any and every type of medical or trauma emergency. I am constantly learning new things every day and I enjoy every moment of it.
