Today we’d like to introduce you to Nina Amadi.
Hi Nina, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I got started by getting up one day and deciding to go to Steiner school of esthetics day classes. My kids were big enough for me to focus on my endeavors and so i signed up for school. Finished my Day classes in May 2015. I did not get my license until 2016 and landed my first job in the esthetic field as a lash tech at amazing lash studios to get my feet wet. A year later continued my esthetician journey at Depil Brazil doing Brazilian waxing only. Although I was there I really wanted to incorporate all my skills in one. A little less than a year later I Opened up my suite at Salons by JC 2018. Opening up your first suite is super exciting. You get to become creative and you seem unstoppable and every client that comes through your door is an opportunity to show your skills and an opportunity for more clients and referrals. I was in a suite so some were walk-ins and major part was Groupon. Groupon has acutually brought me some GREAT clients. Some of them I still see today. I got my first client by going hiking with my bestie and I had my old work jacket that said LASHES and a lady stopped me and said “DO YOU DO LASHES?’ I said yes . We immediatley exchanged information. She booked an appointment and then her boyfriend booked a back wax. I was able to pay my booth rent with those 2 appointments and some lunch money left over. If you keep that “GO” mentality and feeling you will attract more “NATURALLY”. It doesn’t feel like pressure or markteting or like a “HAVE TO”. It will come off easily and receptive on both ends. I would attend events with other local and growing entreprneurs that also had a drive and a vision. Keeping a momentum despite whatever is going on around is also key. Giving your clients quality service no matter what platform they come from is pivotal. I know some have a stigma of using GROUPON. However, understand that people know groupon because groupon advertises for GROUPON they dont know YOU as a service provider and a business. The people are looking for a service and a great review and thats where you shine. Once they step into your place of business it is up you to show them the best of what you got and keep them coming back.
Everything was great then 2020 happened. I was like What is this? and What is happening?. As Everyone had that same question. Personally, I wasn’t sure if I should continue but I stayed the course. Salons started to reopen. Clients were tired of being in the house and start their services again. 2020 has been my best year to date. It was so much going on buisness wise and potlically. There was a support like non-other in black owned businesses during that time. I had many appointments that was booked simply because their mission was to support local black owned businesses. Which was eye opening and highly appreciative.
I Have been at my current location since September 2019 at Legacy Salon Suites and Spa located in lewisville,Tx. I am also a Licensed Esthetic Instructor.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road has not always been smooth. When i first started I didn’t even have a car. I was using my sister’s car and had to move in with her temporarily because I could not get to school. She lived closer to the school so i told her to make room we are back together again. She said “OH BROTHER” with a smile lol. I didn’t get my own vehicle until i was leaving Amazing Lash Studios. Fast forward, to getting Rental home in 2020 and then found out that my oldest sister’s Cancer had came back but in a different part of her body. We always stayed positve and unfortunately she succombed to the illness on July 25, 2022 and litterally passed away in my hand. I was with her until her last breath and took care of her as well and i would do it all over again if I had to. She has always been a rock and my encourager, and such a positve force in my life and my family and it’s different without her and I’m still trying to get accustomed to it. But I know she is in a better place and not in pain anymore.
