Exploring Life & Business with Patrick Morrow of This Little Bean of Mine

Today we’d like to introduce you to Patrick Morrow & Brett Vance with This Little Bean of Mine.

Hi Patrick and Brett, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
We met in college (Dallas Christian College) and pretty quickly connected over a shared interest in coffee, but also ideas for business and fun. As the founders of This Little Bean of Mine, we’ve collectively spent about 20 years in the coffee industry, most of it working for a well-known big box coffee company but also some roasting at home and developing our own tastes and profiles. In January 2019, we decided to launch our own small coffee roasting business.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
As a small start-up business (can you call us a start-up at two years?), we definitely have had some hurdles along the way. We’ve had to deal with obstacles from vandalism & theft, to making the tough decision to distance ourselves from farmer’s markets due to risks from COVID-19 in this last year, and the hit that our customers have had because of the decline in traffic at their restaurants/coffee shops. While these have been somewhat counterbalanced with an increase in people buying and brewing coffee at home, thanks to more people than ever working from home, it still stunted our growth plans for the last year.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about This Little Bean of Mine?
We are a fresh-roast-focused coffee roaster based out of Rowlett, Texas. While most of our focus is on the coffee, we operate our entire business with three fundamental priorities: Fresh is Best, Every Coffee is Unique, and Enrich Every Life We Touch. We use those for everything from setting our business standards, to our operational and sourcing choices, to how we dedicate a % of our profits to go to non-profits that we believe in and support.

We have a few current business partners that we offer our coffee through (coffee shops like Coral Reef, restaurants, etc.) but we also sell directly to customers from our website. Currently, we only sell coffee, but we’ll be expanding to selling brewing equipment and building community and knowledge through our website.

We prioritize freshness, as we believe that freshness of coffee can be a bigger factor in a coffee’s flavor delivery than even the initial quality of the coffee. Starting with that, we can then focus on having a variety of coffees, ranging from our core coffees to some more unique, exquisite small lot or special project coffees.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Aside from our main priorities, we are relentless in making sure that our coffees are not only objectively good but that people are enjoying them and discovering a new passion or interest in coffee.
