Today we’d like to introduce you to Pavel Overtchouk.
Hi Pavel, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I am a physician specializing in interventional cardiology. Along with a few colleagues, we observed that some patients have complications during heart surgeries. By complications, I mean stroke, pacemaker, and procedure failure among others. Stroke causes paralysis, dementia and increases the risk of dying in the days after the surgical procedure. Predicting which patients are going to have a stroke has been considered as impossible due to a complex entanglement of various factors. But we thought that with the recent progress in artificial intelligence such relationships could be captured. Hence, using my knowledge in software development and artificial intelligence, I built an initial software able to predict which patients could be at high risk of complications. We tested the concept in clinical practice and observed good results. This encouraged me to transfer the technology to the industry and make a commercial product out of this software. The goal is to make the software accessible for everybody and reduce the risk of complications related to heart surgery.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Getting a start-up product off the ground in the healthcare market is a difficult process. It forces founders to multitask and learn how to tackle product development, regulatory review, intellectual property protection, research, and sales at the same time.
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about alviss.ai?
alviss.ai builds AI software to apply predictive medicine to heart surgery. Our products aim at preventing heart surgery complications such as stroke by identifying patients at high risk of complications and deploying preventive treatments in a targeted way. We are the first to apply predictive medicine principles to heart surgery and cardiovascular interventions. So, we are the pioneers in our domain. Our software products are medical devices and applicable for procedures performed in the United States and all over the World.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
For somebody starting a startup project without initial network in the industry, the road is long but feasible. Social media made it easier to find and reach out to anybody. And good accelerators are difficult to find and integrate but have the potential to generate important introductions that wouldn’t be possible otherwise.
