Exploring Life & Business with Phuoc Nguyen of DFW Orthotics and Prosthetics

Today we’d like to introduce you to Phuoc Nguyen.

Hi Phuoc, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I did my undergraduate at the University of Texas at Austin. At that time, I was taking courses to go into the medical field such as a nurse or doctor. During my junior year, my father’s friend that is in the field of Orthotics and Prosthetics came to visit our family. He talked to me about his field of work, and how rewarding it is to help out patients who need an orthosis or prosthesis and that you’re able to work with your hands. After that discussion, I researched more about the field of Orthotics and Prosthetics and shadowed a local Orthotist/Prosthetist in Austin. I found the field to be very interesting and I decided to pursue the field. After graduating from UT Austin with a Bachelor of Arts in Biology, I was accepted to the Orthotics and Prosthetics program at UT Southwestern Medical Center. I graduated with a degree in Bachelor of Science in Orthotics and Prosthetics in 2011, then did my Orthotic residency in Michigan with Wright & Filippis and then my Prosthetic residency in Florida with South Beach O and P. After working in the field a few years, I decided to take the leap to opening my own company in 2018. My company does Orthoses (aka braces) and Prostheses (aka artificial limbs) and I am able to help the patients at their home or their facility because our company is mobile. I enjoy working for my patients because it gives me a sense of purpose and it is very rewarding to be helpful in their rehabilitation process.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The challenges I face are keeping up with the latest technologies in the field of Orthotics and Prosthetics and getting those devices covered by my patient’s insurances. I’ve learned to work with insurances to make sure the patients qualify for the items and also have had to appeal some of the insurances decisions to help get the right items for my patients and to improve their quality of life.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
DFW Orthotics and Prosthetics was created to help make it as convenient as possible for my patients to receive their orthosis and prosthesis. We try our best to make it convenient by providing a mobile orthotic and prosthetic service, meaning we can see the patient at their home or facility their in. If the patient prefers, they can also get treated in our office in Plano. I understand it is difficult for our amputee patients to get transportation and also safely get to any of their medical appointments, so we provide our mobile services to them. We specialize in lower limb orthotics and prosthetics, and what separates my company from others is the improved communication, quality orthoses and prostheses, and our desire to help improve our patient’s lives with our orthoses and prostheses. What I’m most proud about for my company are the employees that work for my company. Each one of them are very caring and dedicated to providing a great product and service to our patients. Without my great team, my company would not be as successful as it is now. I would like your readers to know that if they or someone they know are looking for quality service for an orthosis or prosthesis or are not satisfied with the current orthotic and prosthetic company they’re with, that my company is ready to help.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
The biggest shifts I see my field going towards are what type of materials and CAD/CAM technologies we can use for fabricating orthoses and prostheses. I also see insurances accepting more changes in the field of Orthotics and Prosthetics and covering the new technologies to help improve our patient’s lives.
