Exploring Life & Business with Priya Patel of overbookMD

Today we’d like to introduce you to Priya Patel.

Hi Priya, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My journey from clinical pharmacy to health technology leadership has been defined by relentless vision, operational grit, and a deep commitment to bold, patient-centered innovation.

Over the past 16 years, I’ve had the opportunity to work across hospital systems and entrepreneurial ventures. Whether managing multimillion-dollar budgets or scaling teams, I’ve consistently turned complex challenges into opportunities for meaningful growth. My foundation in frontline clinical care, combined with formal leadership training at a Fortune 500 consulting firm, has given me a unique lens to navigate healthcare’s operational and regulatory complexity.

I’ve always been driven by a mindset rooted in innovation and solutions-based thinking. During my time at Baylor Scott & White and HCA, I led multi-hospital operations and grew surgical centers by identifying gaps, streamlining systems, and implementing scalable strategies that improved both patient outcomes and financial performance.

But one of the most defining chapters of my career has been co-founding OverbookMD—a health-tech platform built to address one of the most critical issues in healthcare today: delayed access to care. Our mission is simple but powerful—connect patients and employees to top-tier, in-network physicians within 48 hours. We created the OverbookMD Quality Index (OQI)—an AI-powered metric that evaluates physicians on quality and outcomes—so patients aren’t just seen quickly, they’re seen by the right providers.

I’m proud that our platform is already making an impact. We’ve saved employers tens of thousands in healthcare costs, expanded access to high-demand specialties, and built real momentum in both employer and consumer markets.

At the heart of my work is a passion for building systems that don’t just function—but truly serve. I believe in balancing data-driven decisions with human empathy, and that healthcare innovation must always center the patient. I’ve been fortunate to mentor future healthcare leaders, speak on national platforms, and collaborate with incredible teams—and through it all, I remain committed to challenging the status quo.

From managing large-scale operations to reimagining how fast, high-quality care should work in this country—I’m not just leading change. I’m helping build the blueprint for what healthcare can and should be.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road has definitely not been smooth—but every challenge has been a lesson in resilience and purpose. Healthcare is one of the most complex, highly regulated industries, and unlike manufacturing or distribution, it is deeply human-centered. What may seem like a logical solution on paper doesn’t always translate into the best outcome for patients in practice.

One of the biggest struggles has been navigating the tension between innovation and compliance. There are times when the right thing to do for operational efficiency may conflict with the optimal path for patient care—and in those moments, it’s critical to step back and realign strategy with what’s truly best for people. I’ve had to learn how to lead through that complexity, to build cross-functional buy-in, and to always center decisions around patient outcomes—even when it meant taking the harder route.

Balancing financial stewardship with compassionate care, driving innovation in rigid systems, and leading teams through uncertainty have all shaped my journey. But those experiences are exactly what pushed me to think differently, lead boldly, and ultimately build solutions like OverbookMD that challenge the status quo while honoring the core of what healthcare should be—human.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
OverbookMD is a health technology platform built to solve one of the most frustrating problems in healthcare today—access. We connect patients and employees to top-tier, in-network doctors within 48 hours, bridging the gap between demand and availability in a way that prioritizes quality, outcomes, and speed.

What sets us apart is our OverbookMD Quality Index (OQI)—a proprietary, AI-driven tool we developed to evaluate and approve physicians based on real-world data and clinical performance. We don’t just match patients with any available provider—we match them with the right provider, quickly and confidently.

We specialize in high-demand specialties like cardiology, neurosurgery, orthopedic surgery, psychiatry, and bariatric surgery, and offer unique services like pre-surgical clearances, Department of Transportation support, and internal referral management for employers and PCPs. Our platform is designed to support employers, healthcare navigation groups, and individual consumers, all with a single goal: fast, high-quality care that’s in-network and outcome-focused.

What we’re most proud of is the impact we’re already seeing. One employer saved over $32,000 through better access and faster care. Patients are avoiding long wait times, specialists are optimizing their schedules, and employers are improving workforce health and retention—all through a simple but powerful platform.

At its core, OverbookMD is built on the belief that healthcare access shouldn’t be a barrier—it should be a bridge. And that’s what we’re here to build, one appointment at a time.

What matters most to you?
What matters most to me is impact with integrity—creating solutions that truly make a difference in people’s lives while staying grounded in compassion, ethics, and purpose.

In healthcare, every decision affects real people. It’s not just about metrics or margins—it’s about someone’s parent, child, or loved one getting timely, quality care. That responsibility has shaped every step of my career. Whether I was overseeing multi-hospital systems or building OverbookMD from the ground up, the driving force has always been the same: How can we do better—for patients, for providers, for the system as a whole?

Making meaningful change in healthcare is hard. It’s complex, regulated, and slow to move. But it’s also where the stakes are highest—and that’s why I’ve committed my career to building better systems, leading with empathy, and always keeping the human element at the heart of everything I do.
