Today we’d like to introduce you to Racene Nguyen.
Hi Racene, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Growing up, I was enamored with the cakes my aunt would decorate for me for my birthdays. I always found it nostalgic to be able to look back and see the cakes. The cakes could tell a small story about who I was at that time or what my interests were. I wanted to be able to give those lasting memories to others so I taught myself how to decorate cakes. I started making cakes for my family, friends, and coworkers, then that grew to having actual clients. I did this from my home for a few years until my friend Nancy Castillo, who was a pastry chef, and I decided to open Reverie Bakeshop in September 2013.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The biggest challenge we have had on this business journey has been the pandemic by far. With ingredient and supply shortages, we are still currently recovering and taking it day by day. I am grateful that we have an amazing team that have weathered these storms with us, It takes a lot of last minute changes and adjustments to make it through shortages. The group of people that works with us are extremely talented, patient, and flexible that we’ve been able to keep all the positive energy, support, and solutions alive even in the most stressful times.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
We are an all-vegan bakery in Richardson, Texas. Looking for a cake? pies? cheesecakes? kolaches? french macarons? We have all of those options and more! Everything is egg-free, dairy-free, all vegan, and we also have some gluten-free options. Our current location is a brand new space that we opened over this past summer. You won’t miss us, we are right off of Coit and Arapaho road. The bakery is a bright cheery space where you can enjoy a fresh cup of coffee (which we purchase from local roasters, Eiland Coffee Roasters here in Richardson) with a variety of breakfast pastries. My favorite part about our bakery is that there is something for just about everybody and you cannot tell our pastries are vegan.
How do you define success?
I think success is the result of good outcomes. Here at Reverie, we have thankfully had many of those, especially over this past year. Prior to the pandemic, we envisioned a plan for our team and the bakery. When the pandemic occured, that plan changed and everything became unpredictable. The food industry is like that though, it is already very unpredictable. I think that’s what makes many of us in the food industry so resilient to challenges and sudden changes. In terms of success, we quickly adjusted schedules, budgets, plans, and used any resource available in times of need (including help from our friends, family, and team). The people that helped us along the way, I am forever grateful to them.
