Today we’d like to introduce you to Sabrina Scott.
Hi Sabrina, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’ve been a federal government employee for over 15 years and I’ve never wanted to own a business. I thought it would be too much and I figured being a business owner was too risky. “What if this?” and “What if that?” were the thoughts that would come to my head. I’ve always worked several jobs to make sure that my kids and I had the things that we need and some of the things we want. It wasn’t until after my daughter graduated from high school in 2018 and me not being able to afford to send her to college, even with working several jobs, that the thought of owning a business crossed my mind.
For several years, I would research how to make my own hair care products. I couldn’t find hair care products that would hydrate and keep my hair moisturized. During my research, I learned that my hair type is low porosity, which explains why my hair wouldn’t stay hydrated and moisturized. Low porosity hair is hair that repels moisture and resists penetration of hair care products, which is exactly what my hair was doing.
Lovely Mane Haircare was created in May of 2020, during Covid-19 quarantine. It allowed me time to research more about making my own haircare products. I love helping people and I know that I’m not the only one that has low porosity hair, which is why I decided to form a business selling hair care products. I’ve made a few products from home but I decided to hire a chemist to help formulate and manufacture my products to make sure that the ingredients in my products were consistent and safe in each product. Lovely Mane Haircare is made with high-quality vegan-friendly products and FDA-approved.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No way has it been a smooth road. I knew it wasn’t going to be easy but I didn’t realize what it really takes to be a business owner, especially for a person who never wanted to own a business. Before I launched my products and right after I launched my products, I had a lot of support and sales. Shortly after the launch, the sales and support was decreased. I understand now that the reason for the decrease in sales was due to not having a marketing/sales plan together before launching. I’ve also had to work extra hours at a job that I’m no longer passionate about in order to fund my business. I’m in the process of starting from the beginning and working my way to where I should be, as suggested by a seasoned business owner. I’ve been doing a lot more research on starting a business and being a business owner because it’s a lot more than I imagined. It’s not just about selling my products, it’s also about the behind the scene things such as marketing, knowing the in’s and out’s of being a business owner. It requires lots and lots of research and getting a full understanding of your business and what it takes to make the business successful.
As you know, we’re big fans of Lovely Mane Haircare. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Lovely Mane Haircare is a vegan-friendly luxury haircare brand. We sell hair care products that helps to hydrate and moisturize your hair while also making your hair soft and more manageable.
What sets me apart from others is the fact that my products were created based on my hair needs which means that I not only sell my products, I use them as well. Since creating Lovey Mane Haircare, I’ve thrown away all of the other hair care products that I’ve purchased. Now I don’t have to waste money on products that don’t work. I love being able to provide something that will help others in any way.
I’m most proud of the fact that I even started my brand and that I’m confident in my brand and that I stand by my brand and that it was given to me by God. I’m not religious but I do believe in God. God speaks to me, I was able to start hearing him and feeling his presence in 2015. He has prepared me for so many things that I wouldn’t have been able to go through had he not prepared me for them. God told me at the end of 2018 that I would have a new job but that it wouldn’t start until the next year. I had two job interviews in 2019 and didn’t get either one of the jobs, one was because I would have had to take a pay cut and I didn’t get the other job because of lack of experience, which I know for a fact wasn’t true. I cried and asked why God told me that I would have a new job. I hadn’t had a job interview in over 14 years and yet I was selected for two interviews within the same year. God spoke to me again and said to me that those two jobs were jobs that I thought were for me but it wasn’t what he had for me. Lovely Mane Haircare is what God has for me and I will make sure that I let God guide me through this journey.
I want the readers to know that I am evolving and elevating so that Lovely Mane Haircare will become one of the best haircare brands on the market. I’m also looking to expand the products that I offer. At the moment, I only sell three products, Lovely Mane Intense Hydrating Shampoo, Lovely Mane Intense Hydrating Conditioner and Lovely Mane Hydrating Leave-In Conditioner along with the Lovely Mane Detangling brush.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I’ve never been a risk-taker but I’ve learned to be since the Covid-19 pandemic. Taking risk is a good thing as long as they are positive risk. I’ve always wanted to play it safe with certain things and playing it safe isn’t always a good thing. Even though I haven’t quit my full-time job to become a business owner, I still consider myself as taking a risk with starting my business because I am using my personal funds to fund the business. Risk-taking can bring out qualities in a person that they never new they had and I’m proud to have taken this risk.
