Exploring Life & Business with Sandy Sekhon of Golden Colibri

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sandy Sekhon.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My journey into the world of tallow began when I was desperately searching for relief for my daughter, who was struggling with eczema. Seeing her in discomfort and pain was heartbreaking, and as a mother, I felt determined to find a natural solution that would truly help. When I rediscovered the transformative effects of beef tallow on her skin, I knew I had to share this discovery with others. It was a bittersweet realization—I felt saddened by how I had forgotten this natural remedy, rooted in ancestral knowledge, yet grateful to have found it again.

In many ways, this journey brought me back to my roots. Growing up as a Mexican American, I watched how every part of the animal was used, but I didn’t always appreciate it. My grandmother would often talk about the benefits of using natural ingredients like beef tallow, but at the time, I didn’t fully grasp the wisdom she was sharing. Now, I see how right she was, and it feels like a beautiful way to honor both my heritage and my grandmother’s knowledge.

That’s why I named my business Golden Colibri—the hummingbird symbolizes my daughter, whose presence brought me back to myself and inspired me. The gold represents the strength and richness of my culture. Together, they remind me of the resilience and beauty found in tradition and growth.

Building this business has also been a journey of rediscovery for me. After battling postpartum depression and anxiety, I never imagined I would be where I am today—creating natural skincare that helped me daughter and now so many others. My daughter became the catalyst for this journey, reminding me of my dreams and helping me reconnect with myself and my ancestry.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The journey of entrepreneurship has definitely been a roller coaster—filled with excitement, challenges, and endless learning. One of my greatest struggles has been believing that I deserve to be in the “room.” Running a business where you are not only the face but also the driving force, while wearing all the hats, can feel overwhelming. There’s no manual for this, and sometimes it’s hard to silence that inner doubt.

Owning a business has shown me that it’s not just about building a brand—it’s also about personal growth. It’s highlighted areas where I need to grow, and I’ve learned to push past self-doubt to embrace the process. What keeps me grounded are the incredible connections I’ve made along the way.

A bright light on this journey has been the support and encouragement from other local businesses. Being embraced by places like Conexión Acupuncture, which carries my product, as well as Olmo Market, CocoAndre, Mi Cielito Lindo, Salutierra, among many others, has been truly uplifting. Their belief in my vision and willingness to support my business has made such a difference, and I’m so grateful to be part of a community that values connection and collaboration.

Hearing from customers who share how my products have made a difference in their lives is also incredibly rewarding. Whether it’s a parent telling me how their child finally found relief from eczema, someone saying it helped with rosacea, or a story about healing a scar from a burn, these messages remind me why I started Golden Colibri in the first place.

I’m constantly learning and adapting, and while the path hasn’t always been smooth, I wouldn’t trade it for anything. The support from the community, fellow small businesses, and my family keeps me inspired and gives me the strength to keep moving forward, no matter the challenges.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
At Golden Colibri, I create high-quality, natural skincare products centered around locally sourced beef tallow. My journey started with the desire to find relief for my daughter’s severe eczema, and after discovering the incredible benefits of beef tallow, I knew I had to share it with others.

I specialize in crafting tallow balms that cater to a variety of skin needs—from sensitive, eczema-prone, and acne-prone skin to those simply seeking deep hydration and nourishment. Each product is thoughtfully made with simple, organic ingredients, honoring the tradition of using natural remedies passed down through generations.

What sets me apart is my dedication to quality over creating multiple products. I’m very intentional about what I put out—I won’t release a new product unless it’s something I’d love to use on myself and my family daily. It has to meet my personal standards before I share it with others. I’m also especially proud that I source my beef tallow locally from an artisanal farm, supporting sustainable practices and ensuring the highest quality ingredients. My products are crafted in small batches to maintain freshness and effectiveness, and I’m committed to building relationships with other local businesses.

What I’m most proud of is the impact my products have on people’s lives. Hearing stories about how Golden Colibri helped someone’s child find relief from eczema, provided comfort for really dry skin, or even sparked meaningful conversations about heritage is incredibly rewarding. I love hearing how customers share their excitement about discovering that using tallow is part of their culture and how it’s opened conversations with their grandmothers about how they used tallow growing up. Those connections are so beautiful and remind me why I do this.

Ultimately, Golden Colibri is a celebration of resilience, tradition, and the power of natural skincare. I’m just so grateful to be able to share this knowledge. The moment someone hears about tallow skincare for the first time, there’s so much joy in my heart knowing it will be a beautiful discovery for them too.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The most important lesson I’ve learned on this journey is to take it slow, breathe deeply, and stay grounded in my “why.” It’s so easy to get caught up in what you think you should be doing, what others think you should do, where you should be, or how you should measure up to others. As a business owner, it’s natural to feel that pressure, especially when you’re constantly seeing what others are doing.

For me, it’s been about learning to stay true to my standards and the reason I started this business in the first place. I began Golden Colibri to help my daughter find relief and to share the power of natural skincare rooted in tradition. That purpose keeps me focused, even when doubt creeps in or when it feels like I should be doing more.

I remind myself to enjoy the journey, to celebrate the small wins, and to honor the balance between motherhood and entrepreneurship. Whether I’m creating a new batch of balm or connecting with a customer who found relief through my products, I choose to be present and grateful. Staying true to my purpose has helped me build something meaningful, and that’s what matters most to me.
