Today we’d like to introduce you to Shawn Burns.
Hi Shawn, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Shawn Burns; I feel like I wear several different hats in the wellness and mindfulness space. I’m a Yoga and Fitness instructor with an extensive background in Vinyasa and Power Yoga. I relocated to Dallas, Texas in July 2021, after coaching at The University of Arkansas for 5 years to open Jungle Dallas, a boutique fitness studio in the Heart of Bishop Arts. In a short time, I created an authentic and vibrant community unique to the Bishop Arts/Oak Cliff Area. Life throws you lemons, and unfortunately, my time at Jungle came to an end, and I chose to make lemonade, “Nepali lemonade,” to be exact and moved to Pokhara, Nepal to complete my 300 hr yoga teacher certification. Before I departed, I wanted to cultivate a space where people could find comfort and stillness within in. I was fortunate to be given the opportunity to open my own yoga studio, which I coined “The Light Space Yoga Studio – Dallas.”
Light Space is an intimate space with a powerful presence. We believe in energizing yoga flows, cultivated beats, and playlists to create a transformative experience. Often the Dallas yoga landscape is large classes that don’t allow yogis the opportunity to deepen their personal practice, I wanted to create a space where you can get both. Our space only allows 15 people at a time during a class, but that’s how we like it. We have the honor and privilege to offer a more personal experience to students that choose to take up space in our special place. We’re entering month 4 of being open, and I’m constantly trying to find spaces to take up more space in the Dallas community. When I’m not in Light, I can also be found teaching at We Yogis in the Lakewood community of Dallas and at Equinox gyms in Highland Park, Preston Hollow, and Plano. I’m honored to share my practice with so many different walks of life.
It’s only the beginning! In the upcoming weeks, I’m announcing my first yoga retreat in Bali scheduled for April 9th – 15th 2023, and a way for anyone anywhere to access me with the launching of your YouTube and weekly yoga series.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has been a road that has challenged me in aspects I didn’t realize. As a small business, I struggle with marketing to the area that surrounds Light Space. Being in such a unique area of Dallas poses a challenge in attracting neighboring communities to our space. We’re fortunate to be so close to some of Dallas’s top hospitals, Parkland and UT Southwestern, as we continue to expand, it is our goal to become a beacon of stillness to healthcare and area professionals. We’re a smaller space that caters to a smaller demographic; getting the right people in our space at the right time is an ongoing goal for us.
