Exploring Life & Business with Sonya Mofor of Don Morphy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sonya Mofor.

Hi Sonya, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My name is Sonya Mofor. I was born in Cameroon, West Africa and have lived in Dallas since 2005. After earning my Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting and MBA in Strategic leadership, I began working with various companies here in Dallas as an accountant. While working as an accountant, I started working with my brother Daniel a fashion designer, who founded Don Morphy a custom wear label located in the Dallas Design District. I am currently the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Don Morphy and I absolutely LOVE my job! I am not your typical fashionista, but my job is to make everyone else one. In fact, our tag line is “Morph into a Don’, which basically means upgrading yourself into a fashion boss! I am probably the more popular Don Morphy (haha) in Dallas because of my incredible people skills!! I try to be very involved in the community and have a strong presence on social media. My role is making sure the business is running smoothly, creating and maintaining customer relationships, marketing, PR and everything else that supports Don Morphy fashion.

We have been featured in the top fashion blogs and some of the top magazines like GQ, Esquire, Vogue, New York Times, and Huffington Post. As the brand has expanded with the help of our community, we have been extremely fortunate to have styled influencers and celebrities such as Dwight Howard, Bishop T.D. Jakes, Emmitt Smith, and other NFL and NBA stars. I am also a recently licensed Real Estate sales agent (yayyy!!) working with eXp Realty and hoping to use my people and networking skills to break into the Dallas market. I have been a real estate investor for about two years now, getting ready to embark on much bigger projects, and I know it would serve me well to be a licensed agent.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It hasn’t been a smooth road at all! Don Morphy has pretty much been self-funded, so we had to cut back on personal indulgencies to make sure we keep the business afloat. Also, there are several custom clothing brands, so we had to basically prove ourselves to everyone. COVID19 has been the biggest threat to date!! Right after we had the Grand opening of our new location in March of 2020, we had to shut down and it took us at least a couple of months to figure out how to proceed with the new normal. Thankfully, we reinforced virtual fitting (which has been a HUGE success), had huge support from the community and were able to stay afloat and almost back to normal.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Don Morphy?
Don Morphy, founded in 2014, blends the gentleman’s need for classy clothing and shoes that fit perfectly. Our goals is to bring Italian quality and flair to discerning customers in the United States, and we travel worldwide to find the best tailors and fabrics to bring the highest quality to the customer. All of the suits and shoes are designed in the United States and then handmade in Florence, Italy.

We are a one-of-a-kind custom clothier — set apart from other retailers and clothiers as its customer values fine Italian fabrics, craftsmanship, and delicate details. Catering to the fashion-forward, the entrepreneur, the socialite, or the lifestyle aficionado, the Don Morphy brand prides itself in its personalized customer service and quality apparel, making its customers the ones who are changing the face of men’s fashion one expertly crafted suit a time.

Our womenswear though fairly new is hot and popping right now. Seeing the men impeccably dressed has ignited a strong desire in women to be Morphed into Dons as well. Women also love vibrant and perfectly tailored suits and jackets for every event. Women also have a very high buying power, and it only makes sense for us to tap into that market. We have also been able to dress several female celebrities like Tyra Banks, Destiny’s Child Michelle Williams, Mimi Faust, and several others (like me – haha!)

Don Moprhy is the number one and fastest growing Dallas brand for outstanding wedding suits and are able to get our customers clothing that is otherwise impossible to find. If you can dream it, we can make it and are the best at what we do. Our virtual fitting is also very precise and increasingly popular, especially because we have people out of Dallas who want to wear out a brand and are unable to travel. It also helped set us apart during COVID as many customers were not ready to be around other people.

Risk-taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
Risk-taking is the core of entrepreneurship. You cannot own and run a business without taking risks. I am a risk taker and the biggest risk for us was moving from a small space to a much larger showroom at least tripling the size and tripling our commitment to the brand. Most days at the beginning, we were not sure what was going to happen to us, but having an outstanding brand and having faith in yourself and your offerings definitely keeps you going. And remember, the bigger the risk, the bigger the payoff!
