Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I spent my final semester of college in an immersion program in another country, and I was going to be away from my mom (who typically does my hair) for 5 months. I used to get sew-ins all through high school, so I had a lot of hair bundles at home. my mom encouraged me to try to turn the bundles into a wig. I watched a few YouTube videos and made my first wig! It took me three days because I was so slow at sewing, but the outcome was amazing! My mom liked my wig, so then I made her one before I left for my immersion program. During my program, my classmates asked who did my hair, and where I got my natural sew-in done. They were surprised when I told them it was a wig that I made myself! At the same time, back home in Dallas, my mom was getting stopped at the store and people would ask who did her hair. At this point, she gave a lady at the supermarket my information and essentially “forced” me to start a business. The journey so far has not been an easy one, but I’m so grateful for all the lessons I’ve learned so far. Since I am self-taught, I have had to teach myself everything (and learn from my mistakes along the way), I’ve also had to deal with the drama that can come with finding the right vendors, shipping delays, self-doubt, and price hikes due to the pandemic.
However, I’ve been blessed with supportive parents and mentors in the industry that have given me advice and counsel whenever I’ve come across a roadblock. It may sound strange, but the Holy Spirit also helps me figure out issues through dreams and creative inspiration. I have accomplished all that I have by the grace of God. My business is a creative outlet for me and I’m so grateful for all my amazing family members, friends, and clients for believing in my brand and my talent.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It has definitely not been a smooth road, some of my struggles have included; not being taken seriously because of my age, wasting money on bad hair, being broke (because I spent all my money on hair supplies and classes!), balancing entrepreneurship and my legal education/training, not meeting clients’ exact desires the first time around, and not charging my worth. But I’m grateful for all these struggles because I’ve learned from them and gotten the necessary training to prevent these issues from recurring. I’ve also implemented procedures that make the client experience a smooth and personalized one from beginning to end. Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Kuuks & Co.?

This isn’t always a linear path, but I believe that every little thing we do, every interaction we have, and every project we work on, has a long-lasting impact. This is what success means to me.
