Exploring Life & Business with Victor Casas of Casas Custom Furniture

Today we’d like to introduce you to Victor Casas.

Hi Victor, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Originally born in Mexico and moved to san Fernando valley in California in 2001 first job did not go well because I was 18 with no school or experience in any field at all. After 3 months and having already one job I started working with a temporary job agency without any idea that that day was going to change completely the route of my life.

I got a call regarding a position in a furniture company (Ethan Allen) furniture company. It was two of us and the first person was directed to quality control in the company and I was directed to work in the shipping and receiving department. I was trained to unload all fabric rolls from the 18-wheelers every Monday.

After unloading and driving the forklift, I had to put by hand all rolls of fabric in a specific location using a scanner gun so we can keep track of them. After that, I had to pull them again but with work orders and take them to the cutting department, after a year I told my superiors that I didn’t want to be doing that all the time and that it was time for me to do something else.

I decided to stay after I clock out and learn how to cut fabric using computer machines, so a friend of mine thought me how to do it but I was doing it on my own time without making any money. So when I told my supervisor to move me to a different department and that I wanted to go anywhere where I can make money she said, stay with me, I responded I know how to cut, she didn’t believe me so I told her to let me prove it with the machine.

She let me try and it worked I was even better than the more experienced people, so she had to let me stay and work in that department, which saved the company money for training but I got my position fast and made twice what I used to make. One year later I wanted to learn more about the furniture manufacturing process, so I moved to the carpentry department and then to the upholstery department.

After 3 years I learned all the necessary to build a sofa chair etc. Then I moved to Texas because the family was here. I had to start all over and get a job. I found a custom furniture company and applied, they gave me the general production manager position, and making good money there, the owner told me, we have a problem here, we have so much work to do that we don’t know what to do with it.

So I created a system where everything was running so smoothly, after 3 years of success they fired me because they put the son in charge. So I had to start over again working for an upholstery small shop making $8 an hour. After 3 months I applied to another company because I didn’t see any progress.

The owner had so many employers and I thought maybe I can help him save some money, so I recommended he buy machines to cut wood (CNC routers) and that I knew how to use them, he believed in me and bought them. Saved a lot of time and money for the company. After that I thought, why don’t I do this on my own if I already know how to do everything?

So I started looking for interior designers so they can buy or order customized pcs from me and it has worked for the last 15 years. Thank god I took that decision and since then I’ve been happily helping others even to create their businesses, with people that used to work with me. Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I was fired several times by people that thought my ideas were crazy or even my solutions to some problems because I was so young.
