Fit chick that got cancer

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tracy Robert.

Tracy, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
The Heart of Mosaic Fitness & Nutrition is to Empower clients to create a Congruent Life.

A life of wholeness, to make the most of the small moments because those will be the ones missed the most, to risk showing your authentic self and face obstacles with courageous vulnerability, to let the imperfections outweigh the perfections because that makes us more relatable. My desire is to help individuals take the brokenness of their lives, to meet them in their journey of the in-between and encourage them to find the #THRIVER inside of them on the other side.

So, why Mosaic? A Mosaic is the assembly of broken pieces into a more beautiful whole. My mission is to help you change the mirror from the inside out! All of us spend some time in front of the mirror every day. My question is do you feel as good on the inside as you would like to look on the outside? Usually, there is a conflict between the two and honestly, most of us are unsure how to create the connection which leads to an authentic life. We need to look in to see out.

This begins with some transparency… hang on tight here we go…

Before 2015, I was the poster chic for Health & Fitness. Fitness has always been a part of my life. I was a high school and college athlete, and an avid runner. I became a trainer in 2001 after I moved from Hamburg, NY to Plano, Texas. I have taught group fitness, ran boot camps, worked as a strength and conditioning coach and have had personal training/rehab clients from 10 years to 92 years old. I valued the feeling of sweat dripping down the back of my shirt on a hot summer day and then plunging into a pool after a long run or squatting weight so heavy guys in the gym were impressed. I looked forward to moving into my forties believing I had a long life of races, lifting, and motivation to come. My nutritional health was as clean and on point as a Prima Ballerina. I had an Eat Clean curriculum and had the integrity to back up my lessons. Always wanting to create a sense of wholeness I leaned into the discomfort of my mental health as well. I attended trainings; like Discovery, self-help workshops, counseling and become an avid reader on Codependency for dummies and how to have boundaries.

I was struck by lightning (in the words of my radiologist) on January, 22,2015. I was diagnosed with stage 2/3 Colorectal Cancer. My world came crashing down before my eyes. I had zero cancer in my immediate family, lived the healthiest life of anyone in my family, had a second chance at love and marriage and had come to the sweetest time in my life. A part of me and the life I knew was left behind that day and the days to follow. I walked through some of the darkest days of suffering and pain and my diagnosis left with a permanent colostomy. If you do not know what that is it means I am a bag lady with a barbie butt. So, I live with a permanent reminder of not being normal every day… wait that may actually be a good thing!

Here is the icing on the cake (drumroll please…) six hours after my last chemo treatment my husband was in the ER with a blood clot from ankle to the groin and multiple clots in his lungs, diagnosed a month later with CRPS coined “The suicide disease” and we exchanged rolls as we jumped head first into a dark abyss of 2016. That is a whole nother article!

My husband and I have fought through more health problems than you can imagine over the last four years, he has more syndromes than Marvel has movies. As a result, I’ve learned the importance of resiliency and the healing power of the mind and spirit. I understand, for sustainable long-term effects, you must heal from the inside out. I value research and love to problem solve. When I began Mosaic in 2016, I felt that God revealed to me the vision, the destination without the roadmap. Sounds so adventurous (yep that was sarcasm)… but truthfully, I started with what I knew, what I loved and what I could offer to serve others. I took a step and began offering fitness and nutrition coaching and as I picked up the broken pieces of insecurity, fear, and shame I saw the beauty.

I was invited to begin a Women’s podcast with my best friend with Friedonation Productions. It is called the Ladies Out Loud. Our goal is to help women find their voice and create the stories they were designed to live. We have had guests from addiction overcomers, authors and female CEO’s avenging the sex trafficking battle by building tiny homes for girls 12-18 in Dallas, TX through the Treasured Vessels Foundation. Another broken piece found.

Up until recently, I have resisted owning my cancer story for the last several years. Sure I would talk about it, shared memes and inspirational propaganda on social media platforms. I even posted a pic of me with my ostomy bag in support of a young boy who committed suicide because he was bullied. Yet, the creation of my new business was juxtaposed with the death of my old self and that was sometimes too painful to look at. I was recovering from cancer, surviving Philip trials with pain and rare diseases unknown to most of us and looking at my life shattered into pieces so broken there was no superglue strong enough to fix it. I hit frustrating plateaus, redesigned my biz plan a few times, stepped into unchartered waters and smiled through many days of crippling anguish & rage. All the while, knowing I wanted to use this pain for a purpose and hope it would impact someone else, BUT I would think, “Well, I just don’t want cancer to be my story, I mean it’s a part of the story but I don’t want to be defined by it.” Each time I was invited on a podcast, they would ask me to speak on My journey of becoming a Cancer Thriver. Every time I would push down this cringy feeling until a few weeks ago. When my friend Marzia Prince was stepping in as a guest host on The Southern Fried Tea with Jeanette and asked me to join her to share my story of transformation from cancer survivor to thriver. I walked away that day with that annoying woodpecker on your heart, ya know the one? It comes and brings awareness to your avoidant, dismissing ignorant self (eye roll).

So, I choose to stay curious and listen. I accepted that my RESISTANCE was deleting the next step towards healing myself and perhaps another person. That my AVOIDANCE was doing a great job at hiding my shame, which was telling me I am nothing special so carry on. My COUNTERFEIT-self wanted to look acceptable, normal and safe from judgment. Stockpiling these enemies was like stepping around the broken glass shards because you were too lazy to sweep or wash the floor. I was living a cowardice existence rather than offering the gifts cancer and pain taught me. I remembered during my darkest moments finding THAT person who was so #BRAVE and whispered to my heart “You will be ok, you will wake up one day and feel the sun again, you will breathe deep and laugh until your belly hurts, you will uncover a strength you couldn’t have imagined & most importantly remember it is ok to fall apart, to not feel strong and feel sorrow for what you have lost.”

The Road of Transformation from a Survivor to a Thriver requires complete participation, a commitment to braveness, the fortitude to dive deep into the pain and a willingness to listen & offer compassion.

I am allowing myself to step forward again into unchartered waters, I am going all in. I am writing my story and will be looking to tell my story to anyone that will book me, anyone wanting to get real, anyone ready to THRIVE! We only get one shot at life and I realize the precious commodity of time so here is to my WHOLE life.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The Struggle Scorecard looks like this:

the grief of the expectations you had for your life
the loss of innocence, your health, your sex life, connections, faith, the normal, dreams, missing memories with your kids
the rage for what was stripped from you, for life happening to you, suffering, discomfort
the changes in relationships because you see what needs to change
the frustration of rare diseases, the unknown, not understanding why
becoming deeper in debt because you can not keep up with what is required from the benchmark check-ups
the awareness that some roads you must travel alone
the struggle of friends and family glossing over, dismissing, avoiding you because your pain and grief triggers their discomfort
the neediness of feeling weak and requiring help and support
starting over
fear of death
truly suffering without reprieve
letting go of your old self
learning to love your new self
choosing to select your thoughts and battle the negative and decide to find the silver linings

Advice to transition from a Survivor to Thriver:

Find a support system- everyone’s will look different. For me, that was hiring a counselor, working with a life coach, becoming a part of FB support groups, finding others who had a similar journey and had surpassed my experience

Stay Clear that the “In-Between” will feel uncomfortable, full of resistance and blaming, we look to soothe ourselves but it is only when we become acquainted with the darkness that we start to see

Lean into the “The Wrestle” because this is when new things are released, fatigued wears down our ego and failure becomes the launching point into our new self

The Butterfly must struggle to emerge. If you avoid, look to someone else, anesthetize or resist true healing from the inside you prevent your own ability to grow and thrive.

Be Real, Authentic & Transparent with yourself otherwise, you will not be Aware of times you are hiding which disrupts your ability to heal and thrive.

Here is a lesson from nature when the caterpillar forms the Chrysalis, it becomes transparent. When the butterfly comes out of the cocoon, the only way it can strengthen its wings is by beating them against the cocoon. This helps to bring blood flow to its muscles and it will grow strong. If you were to help it out by cutting the cocoon, it would die because it could not fly, get nourished or reproduce.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Mosaic Fitness & Nutrition-Changing the Mirror from the Inside Out – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
