Hidden Gems: Meet Barina Romero of The Modern Spoon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Barina Romero

Hi Barina, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve always had a love for food but wasn’t inspired to create to this extent until I lost custody of my older kids and I only had 2 weekends a month to connect with them. I had to find a way to get them to Come Closer and make every moment count. Working several jobs, on food stamps, now paying child support and barely making it; the drive to make those moments count were imperative. I was in a mission. A mission to find ways to connect with my children on a deeper level, in a short amount of time. I started playing with flavor profiles, creative plating and unique food combinations. Sure enough the kids went from being annoyed to eat dinner at the table to anticipating every meal. Food became a love language in our home. I wanted everything to feel like a warm hug. To feel loved by each dish. To create an atmosphere of joy and communication. Food did that! They became invested. In not just the food but sitting longer at the table. Having intimate conversations. Laughing and coming closer one meal at a time. Years later I found myself with my third kiddo. Homeschooling, and working 2 jobs I found myself losing what once was perfect bliss- dinner together. I took the risk quit my jobs and started The Modern Spoon. I haven’t looked back since. The Modern Spoon started as a meal prep initiative for the person with an elevated palate. It has evolved into Elevated food for ALL palates. Including Keto, Plant Based, Carnivore, Libido, Fertility, Bariatric and weight loss or muscle gain. With every review one thing is common, helping people Come Closer. Closer to their goals, their family or their health. My Cook Book Come Closer-Food the 6th Love Language will be out this year. I hope to continue to love people through my variety of foods. That is why we are called The Modern Spoon-Food Unscripted we are not a traditional meal prep company. We never have the same things twice on our menu so you will never get bored.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Definitely not! The first year losing money to barely breaking even until bi could figure out pricing. I refuse to by cheap products. I don’t just throw some rice and chicken in bowl. I’m a private Chef that spent 13 years perfecting my craft. The process matters. I’m pretty sure I still don’t get paid for my time even now. Lol but it’s worth it is it means people are getting results! We will always continue to streamline our processes. Currently we are working on shipping options as we have had many request!

We are a meal prep company that offers daily, weekly and family meal options. We are known for our ever changing menu. We offer 10 meals each week to choose from 2 desserts and 2 snacks.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I am a self taught home Chef and in 2023 I came in 5th place of Top Chef.
