Today we’d like to introduce you to Bianca Townsend.
Hi Bianca, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
My journey as an entrepreneur started off when I was a young girl. I was 10 years old, and I wanted to make my own money and help my mom out with her bills. My grandfather saw that I had a hustler spirit, and he was my first investor. He brought me a bag of bead bracelets and told me to sell them and give him back a portion of the sales and told me not to spend the profit.
In two weeks, I sold every bracelet to all my friends at school and everyone at the bus stop. I brought the earnings to my grandfather, and he was so impressed that I sold each one in a short time span, and I brought him his share of the proceeds. He then told me to keep it all and he said that I would be a great business owner someday.
I worked several 9-5’s trying to figure out where I fit in and I was just job hopping and learning the ropes of business from each industry I worked in, yet nothing fulfilled my passion, which was skincare.
I had a lot of friends would ask me what the best products were and what my thoughts were on skincare and beauty trends. This is what led me to my venture.
I started my beauty retailer e-commerce business in 2017 called Your Skincare Spot back home in St. Louis, MO. I scaled the business then rebranded in 2019 to what it is today SKIN CABINET. From there I opened my first retailer store and spa in Denton, TX.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Absolutely not. It looks nice on paper or the outside looking in but it’s nothing close to smooth at all. I sacrificed everything I knew to get to this point. I left my home state to start a business in a whole new state without having a single client. I had to build from the ground up. Running a brick-and-mortar solo, you have to be the accountant, the janitor, the customer service, the list goes on. When you first start out, you have to make those sacrifices to do everything on your own unless you have a team.
One of the hardest battles aside from not knowing anyone, running a new business solo is that I’ve been dealing with a roof leak at my location since I signed the lease. This situation has been the hardest on me because I’m stuck in a something that’s out of my control.
We’ve been impressed with SKIN CABINET, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
SKIN CABINET is an inclusive medical spa and beauty retailer located in Denton TX. We also love our community here in Denton, TX so we partner with our local nonprofits to continue to give back. We also are launching a free mentorship program in 2023 to help students learn the ins and out of running a spa business.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
My family has been my lifeline through this entire journey, without them I wouldn’t be able to be who I am today.
